Game*Spark Interview with Yu Suzuki [Full Translation]

Postby Switch » Wed Aug 23, 2017 12:05 pm

Here's a new article translation from Game*Spark Japan, interviewing Yu Suzuki and executive producer Hideaki Morishita.

I think it contains a lot of interesting insight. They speak about the fuss surrounding the teaser trailer despite the fact that many of the characters in the trailer are nowhere near their finished form.

Great interview.

Anyone posting it to NeoGAF? I was banned after making three innocuous posts about Shenmue 3 two years ago (new account with no other posts). Not sure how you are able to maintain an active account there.

This may make me sound slightly elitist, but I really hope there is not too much retrospection and handholding. I don't want for the design to be too focused on some new retard that has never played the games. I want it to feel like a direct continuation for someone that has recently played 2.

HM: There are also things like tuning the game engine.

YS: Right. In order to use the game engine properly, it has to be maintained. In addition, to make it feel like Shenmue, we have to write a lot of shaders and so on.

So there's nothing to worry about the skins.
:D This also reminds me of what Tak Hirai said about using the UE on Shenmue:
TH: If the Unreal Engine had been available then, Suzuki-san would have probably wanted us to make something even better so I probably would have wound up not using it, anyway. I would have created something from scratch. And even then it probably wouldn't have been enough to satisfy him. [...] He would just give me harder challenges and I would make simulations of those.

Poor Tak Hirai :D

Thanks Switch for your quickness.

Q: Yesterday a teaser trailer for Shenmue 3 was released...

HM: Actually, we jumped the gun on it. [laughs]

YS: There's a huge uproar.

HM: It was really planned for today [the first day of Gamescom].

YS: Boy oh boy...

Glad they don't looked affected by the bad reception!

Thanks Switch.

YS: We still have a lot of work to do on Shenhua. [While pointing at characters] Take this one, it's a character that's close to completion. This one's provisional. This is also provisional. This one too is provisional.

That's all I need to hear. Not sure how this mock up of Shenhua is so off the mark but I'm glad this has been noted.

Yeah, some people were saying something to the effect of "Poor Yu must be feeling so discouraged by all this vitriol", but, really, the guy is a professional and a veteran at that. I'm sure that he can handle even the most violent and ill-mannered criticism.

YS: Shenhua, Ryo and the other characters are almost all provisional.

HM: Most of the characters [that appear in it] are provisional, so in that sense there's a risk that we've caused a misunderstanding there.

YS: We still have a lot of work to do on Shenhua. [While pointing at characters] Take this one, it's a character that's close to completion. This one's provisional. This is also provisional. This one too is provisional.

HM: That's the case, yes. In a teaser you can't attach that kind of explanation to each and every character.

YS: [Continuing to point at characters] This one's also provisional. Oh, so is this one. We do have characters that have been completed to a pretty high quality level.

HM: But they weren't ready in time for this time's video. I think the showing of the teaser this time, even in a promotional sense, was a little premature of us.

For an extremely long time, since the project was launched in 2015, we hadn't released a video publicly. This time, since a publishing contract with Deep Silver had been reached, we wanted to make an announcement that encompassed a sense of "The project development is moving forward under a new structure; please be reassured, everybody." Discussing among ourselves, there was a general agreement that such an announcement wouldn't work without images, and so our decision came about to release a video this time.

It might sound a bit like making excuses, but even though there were parts that have a long way to go and that we're not fully satisfied with, it was a case of "we can't release nothing, so let's go ahead and release it".

I really find mind-boggling that people could even only suppose otherwise.

Another great translation, of an equally great interview. Lots of insight, lots of reassurance.
