Cedric Biscay of Shibuya Productions (a team behind Shenmue 3) tweeted:

"I wish you a Happy New Year ! All the best for 2018 ! It will be great with the #Shenmue3 release on #PS4 and #PC and many other surprises :)"

So it looks like they are confident in releasing Shenmue 3 this year if this tweet is anything to go by. He also claims there will be "many other suprises" could that be Shenmue HD?

In a few months we could have that Shenmue 3 demo (exclusive to backers I think)

I reckon the Demo might come around just after the E3. What better time than to show some footage and then let us loose on a playable demo.

What a positive tweet from Cedric! I really like that he seems confident about Shenmue 3 coming this year.
I'm not sure why some people think it will be delayed until 2019 but I guess I could be wrong.

I just really hope, like others that it's out in 2018. The year that Shenmue finally comes back.

I understand that he wants to hype Shenmue 3 but this tweet is still risky. Any delay into 2019 could now result in a backlash. Let's hope his confidence is well placed.

Why would/should he face backlash for parroting the established release date? At present time, the game is due in 2018. If that changes, it doesn't make him a liar.

Why do people keep forgetting that YsNet has nothing to do with Shenmue HD? If Shenmue HD were a thing it'd be announced by them. Furthermore, do you really think if they had the rights to Shenmue 1 and 2 they'd have the time to focus on that instead of further developing Shenmue 3? Come on. They're putting all their resources on Shenmue 3 and if not that would be a gross breaking of trust and example of misconduct for the backers of the Kickstarter/backer slacker.

There will be no Shenmue HD announced by YSnet at Magic, you can count on it. More realistically, since YsNet is also partnered with Shibuya Productions, who make games as well as animated series, I could see a Shenmue OVA animation being announced as a surprise. Perhaps focusing on a cut chapter or a more in-depth scenario from a previous game.

The release date isn't established, 2018 is tentative at best. This tweet gives more weight to the 2018 window then it otherwise would have but we don't have more information about Shenmue 3 itself to support the idea of an imminent release in just a few months’ time. At this point the release date could easily slip into 2019, which will be used by some in the media as an opportunity to attack Shenmue again. To that end it, Cedric could’ve wished everyone happy New Year without specifically mentioning 2018, denying that risk of a backlash. But it's done now, the tweet is out there and being widely circulated in the media. We'll just have to deal with the consequences if things get out of hand later.

It's established in as much as it's the official line right now - obviously subject to change. Repeating already announced information should not be seen as controversial for a co-producer in a Happy New Year tweet.

This is the internet, what should reasonably happen and what does actually happen are often two very different things. We've already seen plenty of crazy media beat-ups surrounding Shenmue 3, starting within hours of the Kickstarter launch. Now even the concept of Kickstarters themselves are on the nose, thanks to a string of high profile failures and scandals. Any sign of weakness or trouble in development will be used against Shenmue 3, like what will happen if the release date gets pushed back into 2019. It's not fair but these are the conditions that Shenmue 3 must operate under.

My hopes for Shenmue this year are actually pretty high.

1. Shenmue 3 is released.
2. Shenmue HD Collection announced and released (minimal hope here but still possible)
3. Shenmue 4 announced as in development (still PS4/PC)

One can hope that all three will be a reality but even if the HD Collection doesn't become a reality at least I still have my Dreamcast for the first two.
