It's still beating a dead horse, but I hope they kept this style of shader

It's a matter of taste I guess.

Unless my eyes deceive me, this particular screenshot features chromatic aberration, an effect we haven't seen in any screenshots since. I quite like the shader, however. Very reminiscent of contemporary horror games.

The 2015-Ryo looked really, well, not so good. But now he looks like Ryo should have to look in 2019. I like his Hair-Style and the details on his Jacket in the newer Clip. The delay hurts, but yes, Yu has told us on the last MAGIC that he is not so sure and do the best he can. I have a good feel now for 2019.

That just looks like a generic UE4 shader.

I know it looks good there but that's just one screenshot of a scenario with not much going on. The recent screens we've seen of busy villages and bustling environments would certainly suffer from using that shader.

In a game known for its heavy use of colour, so much so to even provoke a 'smell', a generic shader like that just wouldn't fit the bill imo. That's why I'm so happy that making a custom one and getting it just right is such a large focus for Suzuki.

- The shaders of UE get created by a visual editor, you are right that it's probably just using one that keeps the maps they've made.
- It won't suffer from performance, the only thing that affects performance is texture streaming, and they can certainly use just a PBR mask to make it performant, I'd say that the shader they're using now is probably more complex (not that it'll actually impact performance in a significant way).
- I agree they are trying to give the game a personal look and they want to get it right, just pointed out that I would be happy if they stuck with that (was it like 2016 ?) art direction (normal, lol).

That's just the E3 2015 Ryo model transplanted into the "Matinee fight scene" demo that comes with UE4.

I don't really see the appeal. I think it looks quite distinctively un-Shenmue, actually.

What we are seeing with the limited amount of shots we have coming out is a game full of colour as Jibby says.

Now look at most big triple A titles they do not use a wide ranging colour palette for their games. Lots of greys, sandy colours, browns and greens. They look good and from my limited understanding of design easier to make look so.

The team have a big challenge on their hands using a wide variety of colours, shaders etc to make it feel like Shenmue but also look good. From the pre-alpha stuff I think it is heading in the right direction.

Agreed on the colours.

Although the low resolution/high compression has wiped out a great deal of detail and probably colour information too, this shot:

Image

- still kind of "pops" vibranty because of the colours. You've got variance of tone in the greenery and the dirt, the wood tones on the Wing Chun dummy and the street lamp, the beige/yellow coming in with the bamboo drying rack, the pale blue sky, the whiteish stone of the Guilin mountains, all the colours in the clothing of the characters, and topped off with the reddish hue of early morning.

Nothing new but a nice summarization of the short new footage from the THQ video.

Chromatic Aberration is this generations bloom. It's very annoying. Way too many games use it and overuse it.

Probably the best implementation of it are in those "found footage" video games. And Alien Isolation I guess, gives it that degraded watched-too-many-times VHS look.

Yep.

Opinions and all, but if this isn't a big leap forward -

- then I don't know what the fuck is. People who even say they prefer the Gamescom '17 look baffle me.
