100 GB! S3 is not going to be small

So they have updated the Kickstarter page to include PC min specs - most noteworthy has to be the 100 GB of HDD space required!

Reading on IGN they noted that the Witcher 3 requires a mere 45 GB of space. (Just as a way of reference)

Minimum:OS: Windows 7x64, Windows 8x64, Windows 10x64 (64-bit OS Required)
Processor: Intel Core i5-4460 (3.40 GHz) or better; Quad-core or better
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti or better (DirectX 11 card & VRAM 2GB Required)
DirectX: Version 11
Network: Broadband internet connection
Storage: 100 GB available space

Now I know it doesn't really mean a whole lot but it does point to a large game with a lot of features and details to require that amount of space. Especially as they are using the Unreal engine there will be optimised features in that suite of tools to minimise the amount of HDD space required (I assume).

I just hope that all cutscenes are realtime as in Shenmue I and II, 100gb means either lots of uncompressed data or prerrendered videos.

I'm pretty sure that the storage value they presented is just a placeholder. It would be really difficult for them to give an accurate estimate for that at this stage of development.

*They also noted that the requirements are subject to change.

True it may come down, but its quite a figure to have out the gate.

Lots of pre-rendered video is a risk, but I'm not quite sure why they would feel the need to do it. Possibly for some bits that they don't want to make in the game (travel sequences or flash backs etc.) but otherwise I don't know why they would pre-render lots of video in S3

Cutscenes are still going to be real time.

The only video requirements we know about are for the Shenmue/Shenmue II cinema shorts.

I suppose alternatively there might be a system that ties into your notebook where you can rewatch certain clues or plot points as video clips.

Either way 100GB should be taken as an approximation that's liable to change.

If it stays at 100GBs on PC, I honestly hope that it's not that much on the PS4 version. Hell, I'm shocked that some games like For Honor end up taking up around 62GB's on the PS4 after all the updates. It's kinda ridiculous. I even upgraded my HDD to a 1TB and have to monitor the HDD space every couple of months. Seems crazy.

That's pretty hefty, as we know it will be a sizable game but..

I think it's a tentative placeholder. I play Final Fantasy XIV and with all expansions and patches up to June 2018, it takes up around 79-80GB. That's an MMO, so I don't see a single-player experience taking up that size on console.

Gotta have some hard drive space available to transfer that data to Shenmue IV. Bring it on!

Uh, yeah, it's not gonna be that big.
Compression of all files into the final game package is one of the very last things that happens in the development process. They haven't done it yet, so that 100gb figure is completely tentative.
I know that's already been said, but it feels like everyone is saying it with a hint of uncertainty for some reason.
So I'll just say it flat-out: a kickstarter-backed, halfway-indie, non-AAA budget game is not going to turn out to be the biggest burden on your hard drive of anything released this generation.

if 100gb is just a placeholder great..

.. but if they are taking the cheap way out and pre-rendering some of the cut scenes because they can't be bothered to optimize them running in real time I'll be pretty annoyed.

There are tons of single player games that takes huge amounts of space int he HDD, Quantum Break (without the movie episodes) tops at 80gb, Unchated is around 70gb, and many others are 50gb and up-
