Was thinking of doing a comparison myself but feel there's not enough material to put up against each other... yet.

While I like how much cleaner and more vibrant the intro scenes look it's definately missing an effect that was intended to be there for atmospheric reasons, so it shouldn't be removed. I'm sure it's all just testing at this point and they will find the right look.

Now this is a concern for me. This seems to happen a lot with HD remasters and I really hope certain effects like this aren't lost in the HD transition. Hopefully by the time the game is released, things like that are ironed out. I do think the cleaner, sharper and more vibrant look of HD remasters can be a double edged sword in many cases, when fog and other atmospheric effects don't always translate well. Hence why I'm stoked for the HD remasters but won't be giving away my Dreamcast originals anytime soon.

I just hope this is not another Silent Hill 2 case, that shenhua looking at nowhere when she should be looking at the camera like in the final retail version is exactly the same as the one I,ve seen in some beta footage of shenmue...

Do you have a link to that? I'd be interested in seeing this for comparison sake.
And if you're trying to imply that they're basing the remaster off of a beta version of Shenmue then I don't really know what to tell you. That would be a completely absurd accusation to make.

Could be a good sign that Sega provided them with the motherload of original assets that they just have to dig through properly. Keep it positive!

It doesn't look too different to when it's emulated with the settings maxed out.

My problem with this comparison is that the DC footage seems to have been grabbed via CVBS. The DC graphics through RGB SCART and/or RGB VGA on a good CRT look as crisp and colorful as the HD up-render.

In this promo videdo you can see Shenhua with the same dead eyes as in the HD version.

You can see the same scene twice one with her ingame model the other one is exactly like the HD trailer, none is the same as the final retail version, that is another of the concerns I wanted to talk in the thread I created.

They're similar I'll give you that. But I don't think they're quite the same shot. The background and camera angles are different. Regardless, I wouldn't call either of them 'lifeless' or 'dead eyed'.

The only real difference here is the aspect ratio. In the remaster, the picture is stretched horizontally, which makes Shenhua seems fatter and it alters her eyes/stare as a side effect.

Nope,

This is captured at the same spot,

Image

Her eyes animation-position is from the beta, not the final game

Maybe and maybe not. The last shot you're showing looks like it's from a different build than the one used for the remaster (different ears, different lips, different collars, even different backgrounds).

It's mainly the difference in aspect ratio. Her face has different proportions. It's stretched horizontally. Squeeze it and it looks almost like in the retail version. It's clear in the comparison video by Cycu1. There is a slight difference in the eye movement, though. It's really strange. As if it wasn't the early beta nor the retail version.
