Very interesting. Thankfully everything’s still WIP, so they’ve got a few months to adjust everything. Hopefully.

I'm no expert, but it definitely looks stretched to me. I prefer the leaner look.

For those who can't see it with the thumbnails, I've made a .gif file for comparison which makes it clear. It is obvious that the remaster has wrong aspect ratio.

Well that Japanese longplay there is from the Dreamcast's VGA but going through a converter and who knows what that thing does. The image doesn't even cover the whole height, that's for sure. I don't have that part of the intro taken from the Dreamcast in any of my videos but check out any recent one and compare the black borders. They are just the slightest bit wider than in the example.
I capture from VGA directly with the best capture card there is for that job and I have it set up to be pixel perfect. Dunno why I'm left standing here as doing everything wrong or bad...

With overscan and such things it is somewhat debatable what the right way for hardware to deal with the image and the right look is. Just think back to the SNES, though of course the Dreamcast has a lot less difference than that.

Still, if an object that is supposed to be round is perfectly round then anyone will tell you the aspect ratio is set just right. And that's how it looks in my DC videos, how it looks on emulators and looks in Shenmue I & II.

No idea why you're doing this. The remaster has an error. It is obvious. That footage from the Japanese retail version has the right aspect ratio. The devs of the HD version need to know about it. That's all.

It's sad that you tell me and the developers of I & II off as doing everything wrong but what's sadder is that people here rather believe this than calm down and take things correctly.

What? The aspect ratio is obviously wrong. Anybody can see that. What you just said makes no sense. How come wrong aspect ratio = doing everything wrong? You're putting words into somebody's mouth. The aspect ratio is wrong and don't be afraid to point out errors. There's still time to fix it. If fans pretend everything is OK, we will end up with a botched remaster.

Nice new screens.

The Shenmue II one is another reason why I don't think the 4:3/16:9 argument is anything to be worried about like concerns thread might make out. That shot is from gameplay rather than a cutscene, as it's from the little question and answers section with Shenhua in the cave. We've already seen a Shenmue II cutscene in 16:9, and running around gameplay in 16:9, so why would this be 4:3?

So I was right after all... Anything cutscene driven is. 4:3...

Oh and there are missing shadows on that forklift race screenshot

That section of the game isn't a cutscene though, it's the dialogue options section in the cave, so technically part of gameplay. We've also seen a Shenmue II cutscene in 16:9, and gameplay in other sections at 16:9.

So maybe just wait for answers, and check the ego a bit, yeah? Thanks.

Look, this is a WIP source code port.

They are literally taking code written twenty years ago for a Dreamcast and making it run on modern day hardware. Of course there are going to be things to iron out at this phase. That's literally what development is.

Your absurd implications that these issues will translate to the final version are hugely unfounded. Take a few moments to think it through before jumping to conclusions like that.
