Quick update on questions some of you have asked about Shenmue I & II
  • Hi-Res Rendering can be turned off
  • Bloom Effect can be turned off
  • Aspect Ratio - You can switch between 16:9 and 4:3 (Cutscenes are 4:3)
  • Area jumping when leaving Ryo's house can be enabled or disabled

Q: I am curious about the loading time between areas...
A: Fast! It's a good time to be alive

Q: How come the lighting is so different?
A: It really isn't. You can turn off all the post processing in the menu and it's identical to the original Dreamcast release of Shenmue I and Xbox release of Shenmue II

Q: What FPS is it set at just for confirmation and can we turn vsync off?
A: All versions are 30fps.

Q: Area Jumping = Fast Travel?
A: Yes, from the Hazuki residence in Shenmue I you can go to nearby areas directly if it's enabled.

Q: Is it possible to zoom in on Shenmue 2’s cutscenes?
A: No there isn't any kind of zooming sadly.

Q: Any plans for 21:9 support?
A: No. But isn't that a little too wide? Even for Shenmue?

Q: Can we switch the controls to the original d-pad movement?
A: Both work at the same time, looking has moved to the Right Stick and you can swap these over.

I wonder if all these options are PC only or also for consoles. These all seem nice and i imagine 4:3 with non hi res rendering would be pretty authentic to DC.

Also someone else asked about loading times and Sega answered that they will be fast. I just hope there's enough time to read the info that's provided on the loading screens before they are gone.

Seems like SEGA will keep giving us more info later.

I'll probably keep the bloom effect off to match the Dreamcast version closer.

I don't understand the sense in not zooming in and cropping the black bars off Shenmue 2's cutscenes. It's going to be incredibly jarring.

I saw someone else make a good point - while cutscenes in general in Shenmue II are in 16:9, in some instances the black bars pull away for a QTE in "full" 4:3.

While you could have the left/right bars slide in for the QTE, you're also going to have to zoom the image out to match, which'll look a little awkward, or otherwise face all the same problems you have by not having the bars.

The only options really are do the letterboxing as they did, or rework QTEs to run at 16:9 (which is more effort than they're willing to go through for this port).

What does "Hi-Res rendering can be turned off" mean?

Will we be able to play Shenmue I & II in the native resolution?

PS. If anybody is interested, the footage portion with Ryo walking through Dobuita in the fan made video below should be very close to what Shenmue I cutscenes are going to look.

Ah yes, that's a good point I hadn't really considered. The best compromise I think would be if they only letter boxed scenes that have QTEs, but I guess that could still prove to be jarring and inconsistent. It's a difficult one.

I'm curious how the latest Shenmue 2 emulator handles this issue. Is there an option for zoomed in cutscenes?

I was mad about cutscenes being 4:3 in Shenmue, but LOL at cutscenes being like this on Shenmue II

Image

That massive frame is horrendous to say the least.

Sorry for being entitled to my own opinion though.....I hope to not get warned againg for that....

You are entitled to your opinion. It doesn't look good, and I wish I could say I was looking forward to playing regardless. But it is what it is. Sega and d3t are not going to change it at this point so I am just going to focus on the fact that people having the opportunity to play these games on modern day platforms, to get introduced to the story, and possibly support Shenmue 3 is a bigger gain than any gripes we could have about the technical aspects of the re-releases.

Also, I checked and there's no warnings against your account so I don't know what that last comment is referring to.

Although I'm an eternal Shenmue optimist and don't mind the 4:3 cutscenes in Shenmue I, even for me Shenmue 2 being in 4:3 letter boxed seems strange. Forgot whom and where, but there was a good point made about not being any less jarring to keep every scene in Shenmue 2 sans bars like during QTEs. The zooming can be done via TV, though would've been nice to be programmed in-game already.

Also, regardless, I stand by my belief that full mode on any TV is just fine while not over stretching it like wide or zoom mode. Been upscaling both Shenmue and all my Dreamcast games for years to DVI 1080p. Hell, somehow i didn't even mind stretched to 16:9 (well, under scanned and full pixel frame, so it was moreso 14:9) for a long long time. Only recently went to 4:3 slightly enlarged to full setting.
