A polished turd with a Shenmue logo on it is still a polished turd with a shenmue logo on it.

it's a good start but not good enough to show it off as what shenmue would look like on a current gen engine though, that's my only problem with it

No. The modelling lacks the genius found in the original Shenmue. Modern 3D engines are also producing more 'light', paper-like 3D models. They lack something from the DC magic. I know it ain't happening, but I want Shenmue 3 on the original engine.

the modelling in the original games weren't that complex at all, it's mostly basic low polygon shapes that are made impressive by the brilliant textures

Thats why i feel that Shenmue III done on its original engine, and released as DLC would be the cheapest and most efficent way to go. Much more of a realistic approach, but still one that gets neglected.

It has nothing to do with complexity of the engine. It's about the sense of style, the artistry, about the God's spark. That's what separates labourers from geniuses. That guy can have the most complex engine in the world and he still won't even get close to what Shenmue represents without having Shenmue's team. Those people poured their souls into every goddamn pixel.

Incidently, does anyone know the numbers of the development team (physics, ai and artwork) both from Shenmue and Shenmue II? Just always go back to Suzukis comment regarding too many people working on Shenmue II.

@dorian I'm not talking about the engine at all just the model themselves, though I agree cry engine would be a bad choice for shenmue I disagree that the modelling is that impressive as they are mostly just basic shapes placed here and there (but then again we can't expect more seeing the capabilities of the dreamcast), now the texturing and artistic direction is where it's really at in shenmue, making something bland seem cosy and lifelike

what i didn't like about it is the way he used normal maps,
also the furniture doesn't feel japanese and doesn't have the 80's look
other than that, he did a good job : )
and btw, i used cry, source, udk and unity and you know what, they are nearly identical, what makes a good game is a good amount of details, decent size textures and good use of light,
lights and shadows are the key to bring life to a 3d environment
and to sum it up (shenmue 3 = shenmue + dynamic light + water/skin shaders + particle system + zbrush ) <_>

you think so? I felt a lot of difference between using unity and UDK, notably in the rendering, UDK was kind of annoying to use for anything other than an fps and crytech seems pretty limited in the customisation from what I saw
