I don't see how. I'm making an observation about plausibility, not making commentary on quality.
The levels in the first few Sonic games weren't all that far out there. They had caves, ancient ruins, oil platforms, chemical plants, sky fortresses, ice-capped/lava-filled mountains, forests, etc. They weren't realistic by any means, but they still had a relatively "grounded" style to them.
Now we have Sonic running midair loop-de-loops in vacuum worlds that have seemingly no terrestrial ground to be seen, with donuts and pastries floating in the backgrounds no less.
How is it hard to grasp that that's at least a little more out-there and surreal than what the series used to be?
