Someone made an awesome clay model of the Phoenix Mirror (then ruined it)

Check it out...

Well the modeling is pretty good, even though the phoenix may be a little bit edgy. But the coloring is pretty bad, makes it look cheap and unfinished.

I still don't understand why no one ever released the mirrors as merchandise for the game. They could be made very close to how they look in the game for cheap and they would sell on their own.

Did you know that Shenmue actually has authenticly labeled real life whisky in it? In the Heart Beats Bar you can look at some bottles of Glenfiddich single malt whisky. I wonder how they sneaked that in without any licensing...

That's not Glenfiddich, it's Glerifiddich.

That's what Yu said... I guess nobody really looked close enough at those low-res textures.

A random thing I hadn't really noticed before, about one of the objects in the Hazuki residence. In the kitchen next to the fridge is a kind of box, standing on the floor. It may not be immediately apparent what it is.

I realized it's most likely a container designed for storing raw rice ready for cooking.
Some actual rice containers for comparison...

Thought I'd mention it in case anyone may have wondered about it. :)

Thank you so much for this information! I always wondered what this thing is for. Looked somewhat like a large old PC case with the black shape up there being vents for a fan.

You always learn something new with Shenmue! :D

I always found it slightly odd that there's no mention of Fuku-san's family whatsoever. Was he just some random orphan Iwao picked up on his nightly curb crawl?

I just realized for the first time that the Shenmue Premiere event was held on my birthday.
Kind sweet to have a "strong connection" to Shenmue like that. :D

^ I know. I'm a Gemini and so is Yu Suzuki. Sometimes I feel so strongly connected to him I think we unknowingly exchange thoughts and feelings. Like, sometimes I suddenly feel like a glass of vino and I think "whoa, that's not me, that's you isn't it Yu?".

Lots of people saying that Japanese is superior. But how do they know? Are native speakers and can critisize if it is good or not?

I believe if you are not a native speak (as with my example) you can not really tell the difference. For one, I prefer the English voice acting, because it is more familiar to the ear (at least I can understand English, in contrast with the Japanese one) and why I love it when it brings me smiles (e.g. "I am just fine and dandy! He he he he he!" You don't get that cheesiness in the Jap one...)

Yeah, the voice acting in Shenmue I was really cheesy, but I like it too. Just adds to the "charm" of it all, for me. I even think some of the voice acting in SI was fine, like Guizhang, Lan Di, Iwao, Ine(-san) & Chai all had voices that fit their characters really well. Shenmue II on Xbox though, man, they really went over the line with the bad voice acting there, I think. I do like Shenmue II in Japanese more, only because it doesn't grate my ears like SII Xbox does...

You know, people make fun of Ryo's voice but to me it kind of sounds very Japanese? Funny people should want an undub to hear the Japanese voices just because the voice acting has this serious-guy-from-Japan, stoic vibe. I know this is not the only issue with the dub, and that subs are usually better than dubs, but it's funny nevertheless.

On an unrelated note, what do you think of the lonely feeling you get when playing Shenmue? There used to be more games like this, kind of like going to watch some old film and being in the dark minding your own business and lost in the scene or whatever. These days games are so noisy and it's always online this online that, and lots of distractions, tutorials and whatnot in-game...
