If i'm not mistaken, Nolan was a consultant only for Man of Steel but got slapped with the producer credit so they could market the film easier.
"Producer" is probably the most abused title in the industry. All you have to do is get a couple of people together or own the rights to a title and BOOM, you get the producer credit. And you'll earn residuals for doing nothing else other than sitting back and watching your ass grow. They're different from real producers like Jerry Bruckheimer, who are actually on set and helping the overall production move forward. But it's hard to differentiate them from the people who do nothing.
