Totally Wolfgame it's a fun feeling and we do have some material this go-around :P. I don't own an Xbox One (and don't plan on buying one unless they got Shenmue as an exclusive) but I'm watching their conference as well. It's really cool seeing all games looking amazing (at least visually and often gameplay-wise as well) now that there's more powerful hardware all around this generation.

FlagshipFighter I might hop in there but I'm trying to juggle work and E3 at the same time :( so probably wont have time to chat. If anything Shenmue related hits however you can be sure I'll be in there in a microsecond screaming profanities.

The only way I can see us getting a Shenmue 3 is if it's a FPS with zombies. It saddens me a little to see how generic the gaming industry has become.

Head up homies! There's always Sony.. I honestly always thought Sony would be a better bet than MS for Shenmue. That probably wont happen either but we knew we were up against crazy odds.. whatever happens just don't give up.

The real kick in the teeth was Phil Spencer's closing remarks in which he harped on about how Microsoft listened to what people wanted and had backed games accordingly. Given that he's openly acknowledged that Shenmue is the biggest request they receive I can't help but question his motives.

What he should have said is; 'We listen to requests to an extent but will only support projects with minimal risk attached'. From a business point of view I understand the reasoning - but why ask what people want when we're going to end up with Assassins Creed, Halo, GOW and COD et al regardless? Ultimately today's generation will buy whatever you put in front of them providing it has blood and killing. Until that changes the idea that gamers have any say over what gets made by big developers is little more than an illusion.

There's a massive difference between backing existing games or changing policies and funding something that doesn't exist.

I honestly don't understand why people seem to always think "well [insert game company] are successful and have money, why don't they make Shenmue III?"

Yeah, video games have changed so much since Shenmue that I think it's nearly impossible to go back. It would have to be branded as a Tomb Raider or Uncharted in a GTA-style open world for it to have any chance of being developed and succeed. If you just see what they're teasing at E3 it's FPS, fighter games, and what I consider hack-and-slash medieval games.

Shenmue fell into a genre all on its own. It wasn't a just fighter game, it wasn't just an RPG, etc. I'd call it an adventure game but that's so broad. I think that's why you see Shenmue Online shifting from the real-world roots we saw in the first to games to more of a fantasy/magic game. And maybe that's because that was the direction the story was going in, but I never thought online was the correct direction.

It would be really weird for a series to evolve from a walking-through-the-streets-of-your-home-town-asking-the-location-of-sailors game to hadoken blasting fantasy game. Have we seen anything like that before?

Why were people expecting anything from MS? They've been the most upfront about their lack of a desire to pursue it, haven't they?

Gutting there was no Shenmue here, but maybe at the next conference/later on in the week?

I did think the E3 showing was great, I don't have a next gen console, but I might be leaning towards Xbox. Sunset Overdrive looks fantastic, and certainly appeals to the nostalgic SEGA gamer within me.

Looking forward to seeing what the PS4 has to offer at E3...

Apart from MS having Shenmue 2 for the original Xbox and wanting to build its profile in Japan, I've felt Sony is our best bet for Shenmue. They seem like the only ones listening when they ask gamers for what games we want made.

I think Nintendo would be more likely than MS to see Shenmue made because they really need people to buy their system or face a really grim future with the Wii U. And they have a good relationship with Sega. And I say all that as a huge Nintendo fan. I don't have a Wii U yet though, because I just haven't seen anything I can't live without.

Are people genuinely expecting something from anyone? Take a look at the games, their grandeur, their development studio, their costs. After presenting their games today, could you really see a Shenmue related game/announcement being made? Seriously?

It's been repeatedly said Suzuki barely has a team big enough to develop a mobile game, never mind a game that could stand side by side with any of the games on display today. You are on glue if you are watching any of the presentations with excitement of seeing a Shenmue trailer.

Games and gaming culture has changed a lot since Shenmue was released... but I feel Shenmue has a multitude of engaging gameplay elements that are still present in the modern age (fighting/combat, investigation, exploration, great storytelling). If developed in a way that accentuates and builds upon these elements I think it could definitely be viable in today's market.

I think the factor that's ultimately the most detrimental to the possibility of a launch is that it would be a continuation of a franchise and a story that has been gone for a very long time. Unless Shenmue was relaunched with the previous games included in addition to the finale of the story, it would only realistically be targeting the core audience that already played Shenmue 1 & 2, which although I'm sure this number is large, I doubt it's large enough to make Shenmue 3 a viable financial risk.

Unfortunately to the best of my knowledge businesses mostly base their decisions off of some tangible data, numbers that can give them some assurance that their investment or gamble could pay off. I think if a company like Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo took the plunge to fund Shenmue 3 the greatest benefit would be the gaming-cred that they'd receive by taking the risk. The amount of people that would talk about and buy their console for Shenmue, the other games they'd buy on that console and maybe the next console from them because they made a new gaming fan, their name in the history books for finishing a chapter in gaming history, would be the real payoff. Unfortunately it's hard to quantify the financial gain of these elements, which most likely will keep the franchise from ever being funded by such a company unless a CEO comes in that just has some huge balls for lack of a better term ;).

It would be interesting to see someone's thoughts on this in specific detail. Maybe a financial analyst or someone that could really crunch some numbers, comparing modern day development budgets, Shenmue fanbase numbers, estimated purchases by aforementioned fanbase, etc.. to see just how viable it would actually be.
