Silent Hills - Developed by Kojima Productions

Postby Henry Spencer » Tue Aug 12, 2014 6:59 pm

Kojima actually delivered on his promise, after all! Looks like the remnants of Team Silent are working on this, too [since they all work at Kojima Productions now]!

It's a playable "teaser" on the PS4, entitled "P.T" which stands for "Playable Teaser".

Guillermo Del Toro is also involved in some way. No idea if Kojima and Del Toro are sharing writing duties or if one is just producing or whatever. Game seems to be first person horror this time, too. Biggest shock of Gamescom, bar none. Finally a new SH game developed internally at Konami again. KOJIMA YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD YOU!

Aside from the fact that it's first-person, I share Yama's thoughts.

Norman Reedus is in it. The teaser was pretty cool. Probably one of the coolest ways to announce a game.

The teaser was pretty cool. Different style from classic SH, but SH4 did that too and still turned out amazing. It's just a question of whether it'll feel familiar enough so as to be deserving of a place in the series itself. SH4 might have taken a slightly different edge on things aesthetically, but something about it still felt unmistakably Silent Hill. Things like Shattered Memories, however, were part of the series in name only, because nothing about the actual horror in it felt like SH at all.
As much as I absolutely love Guillermo del Toro, I'm really hoping that this doesn't just feel like one of his horror flicks with the SH name thrown on for the hell of it. Yamaoka's music will help the atmosphere, no doubt.
I'm a little iffy on whether the Inclusion of Norman Reedus is a good thing or not. Having a familiar face as the main character might take away from it a bit, for me. I'm semi-worried about them "Hollywooding" it up too much with established actors and all that. Guess we'll see.

Wow. The P.T game was fucking incredible to play. The graphics are the best ive ever seen. The lighting is insane. And holy shit was I legitimately scared multiple times. The more I played it the more freaky it got.
This is what the PS4 was made for. And what if they used the Oculus VR headset for this? For those that have played the demo, it would make alot of sense that it would be a compatable game for that kind of thing.
Regardless of that though, simply AWESOME experience. I cant wait for more.

Watching loads of streams about it today and seeing people's reactions to the game is rather hilarious. The game is now more photo-realistic than the previous entries, so its scares are now even stronger than ever before. They did a really good job with the storytelling concept (it all coming from the radio, rather than through cutscenes).

The enemy/creature designs are creepy as hell (there's even a homage to Eraserhead in there). The sound design is incredible though, absolutely incredible. The whole demo was a total mindfuck, so it's still heavily psychological. As a concept tease, it's really good.

Yes the sound design was crucial in fuckiing with my mind. Wearing 5.1 headphones and playing this while experiencing this level of graphical fidelity? Its a wrap. I was floored.
Best next gen experience to date.

I played it again and still got scared over it. Pretty impressive to do that imo. Really LOVE this game. And controling it yourself vs. watching a stream of it does miles more in its effectiveness. Especially with a good TV and sound. I will buy everything for this game. My money belongs to it.

I loved SH 2 & 3. SH 4 was pretty good too, but different. I don't have a PS4, so I don't know about playing this one. But even if I had a PS4 I still don't know. Just watching P.T. at my desk at work was so scary. And that balcony ghost. NOPE. I can play some scary games but some I've avoided.

And it sucks I may never screw myself up enough to play it because of the two legends who are making it. That alone may get me to play it. I've never played a Kojima game, but I know he's good at what he does. And Guillermo del Toro knows horror, he may even be horror. (Off topic: I still lament the fact that he didn't direct the Hobbit movies) And I love the original Silent Hill games. I love the psychology that is involved..with guilt, fear. I read an in depth analysis of SH and the levels of reality vs illusion vs hallucination. It's fascinating. Here's the link if you have time to kill: http://www.ign.com/faqs/2005/silent-hil ... sis-618314

Then they started using Pyramid Head in everything and I think they lost the reason why Pyramid Head was there in the first place. I always saw him as James' executioner. So to have Pyramid Head in other SH games didn't make sense, just like having nurses in SH 3 didn't make sense.

Any tips for getting through scary games like this?

Wear a diaper and buy a night light lol.

My cousin is the same way. It takes him soooo long to finish a horror game because of it, but I think he ultimately gets more enjoyment out of them than people who don't get scared by the games.

You're exactly right about Pyramid Head. I've been saying for years that Pyramid's appearances anywhere outside of SH2 make no sense whatsoever.
Though personally, I always saw Pyramid Head as an analog to James, rather than his executioner. Some would call him James's tormentor as well, but that's another angle on what I think of it; James torments himself over what he's done in the past. Much of James's psychosis comes from repressed sexuality as well, so I view Pyramid Head's giant sword as a bit of a phallic symbol.
As for SH3's nurses, I don't think they're particularly out-of-place; SH3 is a direct continuation of SH1, and Alessa is actually a part of Heather, so the horror directly related to Alessa from SH1 still makes sense in SH3.

That's all part of the joy of the early series though; varying analyses of the stories and their meanings. I loved reading all about that stuff back in the day, and piecing together things for myself.
It'll be nice if Silent Hills manages some of that appeal.
