“Twin Peaks,” the ABC series that was a forerunner of today’s offbeat serialized cable dramas, is coming back to life with nine new episodes to air on Showtime in 2016.

Sources say series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are working away on the scripts, with Lynch planning to direct all nine episodes. Showtime declined to comment, but Lynch (pictured) and Frost confirmed the news via Twitter on Monday morning.

The episodes are expected to bow in early 2016, which would coincide with the 25th anniversary of the show’s demise after two seasons on ABC in 1990 and 1991. The new segs will be set in the present day and continue storylines established in the second season. Sources emphasize that the new episodes will not be a remake or a reboot but will reflect the passage of time since viewers last checked in with key characters.

Mark Frost interview:

TVLINE | For about two years now, rumors have been circulating about a Twin Peaks revival being in the works. How long have you and David been formulating this?
David and I stayed in touch and remained closed friends throughout all these years. It was about three years ago this summer we were having lunch at [famed Hollywood eatery] Musso & Frank, where we often used to go. And we were just kicking stuff around and we started getting some ideas in our heads about Twin Peaks. Suddenly, it felt like a place we wanted to visit again. And that was the kickoff.

TVLINE | Was Showtime the first place you went?
We didn’t go to anybody else. Showtime was the first and only [network] we spoke to about this. There was a nice sense of continuity there, because Gary Levine, who’s the right-hand man to [Showtime president] David Nevins, was our [creative] representative on the show when we were on ABC. We’ve known Gary a long time. We trust Gary. We like Gary. We had a really great meeting with them. And David [Lynch] really loved the artwork on David [Nevins]‘ office walls. And they loved the show. And that’s how it all came to be.

TVLINE | Just to confirm, this is not a remake, correct? It’s a continuation, like TNT’s Dallas?
It is not a remake. The story continues. The seeds of where we go were planted where we’ve been.

TVLINE | In the series finale, Laura Palmer tells Agent Cooper in the Red Room, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.” That can’t be a coincidence, can it?
When you see it, you’ll know.

TVLINE | Are you looking at this as Season 3 of Twin Peaks?
Not really, but just because my brain doesn’t work that way. I’ve always said that Twin Peaks to me was like a novel we filmed every page of. So this is more like we found another volume of the saga, and now we want to bring that to life too.

TVLINE | Will the nine episodes revolve around a new mystery?
If I told you that I would have to give the Kill command to the Predator drones that are circling your house now. And that wouldn’t be cool. [Laughs]

TVLINE | Will the world of Fire Walk With Me be considered a part of the “Canon”?
I think it should be. It’s definitely part of the mythology of the show, and it reflects the work that was done before and it will have some bearing on the work as we go forward.

TVLINE | Is it your goal to bring back as many of the original cast as possible?
Those who want to see old faces, and those would like to see new faces, none of them will be disappointed. It’s far too early to talk specifics about people. We’re not at that stage in the process.

BobTVLINE | In the past 25 years, several cast members have passed away, most notably former set dresser turned scariest TV character ever, Frank Silva (AKA Killer Bob). How will you handle that loss?
I can’t really say. That’s a tough one to go into without giving away too much.

TVLINE | In his book Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks, journalist Brad Dukes explored some of the issues that may have compromised the storytelling of Season 2 and the longevity of the show. There was a lot of pressure from ABC to wrap up the murder, and both you and David were being pulled away by other projects. With both of you fully on board and committed to these nine episodes, would you say that show might lean back towards the heights of Season 1?
That would certainly be our goal and intention… We decided at that first lunch that if we were going to do this it had to be the two of us. It started with us and we felt it was only right if it continued with the two of us. So we pledged right then and there that we were going to write it ourselves, and David said he wanted to direct all of them. And we’ll produce them together. That’s the basis on which we decided to go forward.

TVLINE Will the new series be a Valentine to hardcore fans, or are you setting out to bring in a new generation of acolytes?
It’s fair to say that there aren’t many shows that have a fan base as passionate and dedicated and committed as our show does. And we’re very grateful to those people for keeping the flames alive all these years, and helping whole new generations of people discover it. So, in a way, this will be of special significance to those folks. And at the same time we hope a whole bunch of people want to come to the party as well.

TVLINE | Will Angelo Badalamenti do the score?
Too early to say.

TVLINE | The TV climate is very different than when Twin Peaks debuted 25 years ago. There was nothing else like it at the time. Since then, the show has inspired dozens – if not hundreds — of imitators. Any concern that the novelty has worn off?
Well, the novelty hasn’t worn off for us. I think we’ll be able to effectively translate that into today’s cultural language without too much trouble.

TVLINE | If it’s a success, could there be more?
We’ve learned never to say never. Anything is a possibility.

TVLINE | What does it mean personally to you to revisit this material 25 years later?
I think for me, and for everybody who took part in this originally, it was — it’s a terrible pun — a peak experience. And the chance to revisit it later in life, and see what we can do now that we didn’t know then, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

TVLINE | The second season was rather polarizing, and some fans felt let down by how the story ended. Are you looking at this as an opportunity to bring the story to a more satisfying conclusion?
It’s our hope that these episodes will give the fans everything they felt they hadn’t gotten the last time we left off.

TVLINE | Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask, how’s Annie?
[Laughs] Funnily enough, I just showed the second Austin Powers movie to my son last night, who asked me about [Heather Graham]. And I said, “Oh, that’s Annie.” And he said, “Who’s Annie?” And I said, “No, no. The question is How’s Annie?” And judging by how Annie looked in that movie I’d say Annie’s fine.

Nice interview. I read it a while ago after checking out reactions on Twin Peaks fansites.

I wonder how the series will turn out though considering that the situation on tv is different these days compared to back then.
It will also be interesting to see how they mix returning and new characters.

I was also thinking, in a way Twin Peaks fans are similar to Shenmue fans : the series wasn't really mainstream and they've also waited ages for a continuation after a cliffhanger. Maybe Yu should take a hint after hearing this news ;)

I'm personally stoked. Somehow I pick cliffhanger-prone books, shows and games, so it's nice to see one finally end up continuing!

I think there are some decent Shenmue parallels here, and it's stuff to take hope from. It took twenty-three years, but it's finally continuing. It's always heartening see these things happen.

I think this is good news all around!

I think the best part about all this is that it's on Showtime. I'm not sure how familiar folks in other countries are with how American tv tends to work (and I'm not that familiar with how it works in their countries, for that matter), but Twin Peaks was originally on ABC, one of the major networks, and there's a lot that you just can't do on a network like that. On Showtime, however, you're free to do basically whatever you want with a show, barring outright hardcore porn.
With freedom like that, this ought to end up much more like Lynch's film efforts, which are almost always rated-R. Should be a pretty great ride.

I could say "it's happening again...it's happening again..." like the Giant or "that gum you like is going to come back into style" like the Dwarf but instead I'll say...

I was about to say, lol. Please don't take a hint from David Lynch, Yu...Jesus.

A funny similarity between Shenmue and Twin Peaks though...
Just like Dale Cooper being stuck in the Red Room, Ryo is stuck in that cave [with Lan Di possibly following him there and still waiting for him to leave?]...wonder who would come out of that experience sane?

This is also a celebration for me not just because I'm a Twin Peaks nut, but also crazy about Lynch's work over the years and it'll also be 10 years since Lynch's last project (unless we're talking about his shorts/commercials/music)

I am not familiar with the channel but I kind of figured things out when I saw some comments online (including Frost) talking about what a great choice it was.

It made me think of the movie. Lynch said before that he was more free there and the movie turned out to be darker. Raw in a way. The beginning of the movie also shows something symbolic to that effect.

A tv getting smashed. Probably to mark that this would be different and to show that previous events bothered him.

By the way, about Yu taking a hint.
I didn't mean the exact amount of years, hehe. I was thinking more generally in terms of reviving a series. Or actually announcing something shortly after hinting at a continuation. I just didn't bother to write it all out since I used my phone. I maybe should have :P

I adore Twin Peaks, absolutely brilliant Television. So excited for its return.

You have to remember that Season 2 was complicated by network issues. I don't place the blame entirely on Lynch or Frost as it would disrupt any series writers/directors.

Roll on 2016.

Well it's been about 5 or 6 years since I watched the series so my memory of certain parts was fuzzy, so I went and got the Blu Ray boxset. I've never seen the Fire Walk With Me deleted scenes either so I'll try and make my way through the boxset at some point in the next year.

Hawk from the original series has said that Michael Ontkean will return as Harry Truman. He's possibly who I wanted to come back most after Kyle as the two of them made the show. http://www.alternativenation.net/michae ... win-peaks/

Also see this. Obviously made by a fan but it's exciting:

Twin Peaks co-creator and executive producer Mark Frost plans on publishing a book in late 2015 that will fill in fans of the show on everything that's happened to its characters since the series went off the air in 1991. The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks will also delve deeper into the show's original mystery, and resolve plot holes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The book is timed to come out in advance of the show's return as a nine-episode, limited series on Showtime in 2016.

"This has long been a dream project of mine that will bring a whole other aspect of the world of Twin Peaks to life, for old fans and new," Frost said in a statement. "I couldn't be more thrilled."

Director David Lynch has confirmed he will not direct the sequel to Twin Peaks, citing disagreement over money.

Writing on Twitter, Lynch said he had not been given enough money "to do the script in the way I felt it needed to be done".

"This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing," he added.

Lynch's departure casts doubt on the revival, which was commissioned by US network Showtime last October.
The auteur, whose credits include Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, created the cult drama with Mark Frost in the 1990s.

Revolving around the murder of teenage schoolgirl Laura Palmer, the show was a precursor of dense, cinematic TV shows like The Sopranos and The Wire.

It won three Golden Globe awards in 1991, including best TV series and best actor for Kyle MacLachlan.
MacLachlan played Special Agent Dale Cooper, an FBI agent who got drawn into the seedy town of Twin Peaks as his murder investigation took several surreal turns.

He was due to reprise the role in the Showtime revival when production began later this year.

Lynch and Frost have already written scripts for the nine episode series, which was due to air in 2016, marking the 25th anniversary of the original finale.

In his statement, Lynch said: "I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently."
However, he hinted the show might go ahead in his absence.

"Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime," he wrote.

Soon after his comments were published on Twitter, Showtime released the following statement.

"We were saddened to read David Lynch's statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points.

"Showtime also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm."

I plan to rewatch Fire Walk With Me soon. Unfortunately I got the DVD box set before they released the complete one. I guess that the deleted scenes are only available there?

I read that people suspected Ontkean would be back after he started asking online for a similar jacket to what he was wearing in the show. Truman was great next to Cooper. For example the scenes where he is waiting in the final episode are amazing.

As for Lynch leaving. I'm not sure if the company alone is at fault as some fans assume. Maybe his demands were a bit too unrealistic or impossible for them? Sources say that he demands a contract for a 9 hour movie instead of 9 tv episodes. I agree with some who found that he doesn't need to direct every episode. A few others also directed good episodes back then. But he should at least be there for a pilot, something in the middle and the finale.
It must suck for Kyle though. Back then he felt abandoned when Lynch left. Now, he is the only one with a contract yet and Lynch left again...

Two days ago I saw this : https://www.facebook.com/savetwinpeaks?fref=photo
The cast made some support video and Sherilyn answered question yesterday.

Kyle was pretty damn young when he first made Twin Peaks, so I'd say he'll be fine now, 25 years later. It appears as though Lynch has written the scripts with Mark Frost for every episode anyway, so at least the writing won't go off the rails again like last time (hopefully). There's a lot of good directors working in TV nowadays, so I'm not too fussed that Lynch isn't directing, even as a fan. I just want to see Lynch direct something again, even if it isn't Twin Peaks. It's been over a decade since his last film (which I didn't like).
