Patience.
Shenmue 1 and 2 both demand patience.
In 1, there is no wait feature, unlike Animal Crossing or even Shenmue II. This forces the player to do something they don't have to do in any other game: wait, and to learn to love waiting. It's a thing that literally makes you wait. In II, you have to catch leaves and air out books daily. On replays, those two things are no big deal, but the first time they're a big challenge and bring out similar emotions. When you're searching for info on Zhu Yuanda in II and get the tapes from Huang, you actually listen to the ENTIRE TAPE to get your information. Shenmue challenges the player out of their comfort zone, not only for the sake of the game, but also for the sake of considering new ideas and pushing them into a position of waiting. Both Shenmue games, in the hands of the right player, should make the player a better person because unlike other games, whose only demands are that of game challenge, it actually forces them to consider things, wait, and be patient. Shenmue demands more out of the player than any other game.
