Shenmue articles from Japanese magazines

Postby Phong » Sat Jul 25, 2015 6:24 pm

Here are some articles that I found recently. I don't know enough Japanese to translate them, and they don't appear to contain anything we don't already know, but I thought you guys might enjoy them anyways. Maybe someone out there is making an online scrapbook or archive of Shenmue articles? That'd be a great thing to have.

Four pages Project Berkley coverage from Sega Saturn Magazine in 1998:

Three pages of continuing coverage of Shenmue from Dreamcast Fan issue #04 in February 1999

Two more pages from Dreamcast Fan #14

And four pages from Famitsu DC in July 2001 about Shenmue II

They're scanned very large at 600 DPI so they'd be easier to read and for archival purposes. Probably wait to get home if you're on a mobile data plan.

 YOINK!
phpBB [video]
one warning was absolutely fair, was over zealous on conviction on a response to a subject.
the other one for 'spam' (aka: it was me posting that qualified) which is bogus due to personality clash. why don't who this concerns pull the other guy for destroying my subject, accusing it of SPAM?
oh, i get it now, not one of your cliques, and i watched you stand by and and let him trash it, and you did NOTHING but was complicit in your silence, and totally one sided and agree with it by inactions. (you have the temerity to pull me for spam, and yet, you let your lackey cliquey friends shit on my subjects? double-standards, real fuckin professional dude.)
at least the other staffer explained where i was wrong, and backed it up clearly in writ.

Notice the 'Magic Maze' system is mentioned in this one :D

I can't say I've seen the screenshots featured in the Dreamcast Fan #4 scans before, either (the early shots of stuff that would end up in S2)

Thanks for these Phong ^_^

I noticed that too. I wonder if the article says anything about what was planned for those scenes and if it turned out differently?

Nothing like that unfortunately, just a general description. Here's what the Magic Maze part says:

MAGIC MAZE – Walk through an expansive map with no disk access required!

As the story moves forward, the setting moves to Guilin, a place surrounded by nature. This is where there is a scene where you walk around in the forest, and although it’s not something that is easily noticed, in fact this is where AM2’s technology is subtly on display. It’s a vast area, as you will realize as you walk through it. Despite this, the game doesn’t go to read from the GD-ROM. Almost everything is being processed in-memory! AM2 is truly amazing!
[Caption 1] Ryo walks and walks through the forest in Guilin. I wonder if this is the right way?
[Caption 2] The forest gets complicated. Um... whereabouts is this? If you place a marker on your map, you may not get lost?
[Caption 3a] After passing through the forest, there’s a naturally-formed stone bridge.
[Caption 3b] If you move the wrong way and are about to fall, there is a QTE. This makes it possible to recover.
[Caption 4] At the bottom-left of the screen, a map displays your current location.
[Caption 5] Apart from the forest, there’s also a rocky area.
[Caption 6] Ryo keeps to the path with the Run action, even if the path twists somewhat.
