There's a few short posts about it on this page if you would prefer to merge the posts or move the discussion here?

I don't remember the first time I played Shenmue, but I don't think it went that slow (even while I just barely understood english).

But then again, when I was a kid I could play 10 hours straight and don't even notice.

I don't know if it's a good idea to promote this stuff here since they're basically shitting on the game in every episode so far

It's much better since the last episodes. The stealth part was epic. :rotflmao:

To be honest Shenmue has a very different approach than most games in regards to investigation, specially today that every game have waypoints, mini maps, and everything is a subquest.

The other day I just remembered that when looking for charlie if you talk to one of the women in sakuragaoka they tell you to look for nagai industries (and you find out that one of the fish sellers has a debt with the majong guys), and that can be a little distraction from just waiting till 7 and go to the you arcade.

The first disk has a lot of waiting, you can get to heart beats in the first day, but then you have to wait to find the sailors, then you have to wait to go to the tatoo parlor, then wait another day to recieve the letter. It's pretty slow.

It's slow only if your unique concern is to accomplish straightforward your objectives . Of course, Shenmue is more than a BTA with an hub-world between fights so the labyrinthic pattern between two objectives is more important than the objective as itself.

There is a quote of Suzuki saying that he wanted to provide an alternative to the North-American fast-paced games by offering a game with real Asian values to the Western audience. Shenmue is purposely slow to put forward the in-between and make the player feel good, peaceful and free.

Shenmue reminds me a lot of Columbo by the way. Both share a lot of mechanics: slow pace, opposite of straightforward, care to clarity, simplicity, awkward main character... Both are still the best in their own fields.

The problem (specially in SI) is that it has a point A to B type of approach. And then you simply don't have that much else to do besides it. You're not "free" of taking it slow, because the game put the barrier. You're not that free to do "what you want" because there is not much freedom besides going to the arcade, or just talking around (with not that much flavor texts).

No one actually said anything about time skipping in SII because it's players choice, and you have a bigger world and activities to do. People see when the game is playing you, be it fetch-quests, dungeons or barriers.

So I'm not the only Columbo Die Hard fan :king:

By the way, I 100% agree with your analysis.

I love the endurance run, despite obvious frustration when they don't listen (a staple of the format, unfortunately).

The GAF thread is killing me, though.

I almost gave up watching it when they started trashing the game (they were almost as bad as Funhaus :-& ), but it seems they are doing less of that in the newer episodes. It is pretty entertaining now, but the Game Informer playthrough was better imho.
