I recommend trying out f.lux. It's a program that adjusts the colors of your monitor to reduce eye strain, kind of like what those Gunnar Glasses do but without costing any money.
It took me some time to get used to the adjusted colors, but once I did, it made a big difference. Disabling f.lux after using it for awhile is like being in a dark room with dark-adjusted eyes and someone hitting the light switch.
