4.19 has just been released!

I wonder if YSNet will take advantage of the new graphical advancements?!

If you're talking about them taking advantage of raytracing, probably not. It's still kinda early days for that stuff turning up in games.

A lot of 4.19 could be relevant in terms of just making development a little easier/efficient, though.

If they are still planning to release Shenmue 3 in 2018, I think it is too late to change the engine version

if it is delayed, anything is possible :)

Updating the version of the game engine takes a lot of effort and many developers may just opt to stick with an older version to make things easier for themselves. Or maybe the effort for the upgrade isn't even worth it because it would require you to edit many of your assets to take advantage of the new features.

The new dynamic resolution feature may be something that the team would want to look into, though. It is designed to help with performance on consoles and it doesn't require any sort of editing of existing assets for it to work.

I was thinking more along the line of the lighting enhancement features in 4.18 such as the new Volumetric Lightmaps and Improved Static Skylight Directionality.

Stuff can break when you update engine versions. It's not really a problem for hobbyists who never ship anything, or games that are early in development, but I guess in Shenmue III's case YSnet would have to see if updating would be worth blocking out the time to fix the parts that fuck up.

There's also apparently differences in how things can break depending on if your project is made in Blueprints, or using C++, but I've got no idea which way that stuff swings. Could make things easier, could make things harder.

Ahhhh, I thought you were strictly talking about 4.19.

The improvements you're talking about might not be applicable with Shenmue III because of the day/night cycle, though. Going by the examples on the UE blog it looks like they're mainly for games that use baked lighting, but I dunno enough about UE4 to say for certain.

I doubt they're using anything later than 4.17, it's not good practice to update when in production, but who knows, maybe a small team can manage it nicely.

Dynamic Resolution and Temporal Upsampling is pretty interesting. Would be nice to have for PS4 Pro
