Saw it finally, and enjoyed it immensely.

Definitely a heavier experience than that of previous films in the franchise, but that only means that a second viewing is in order. Somewhat reminiscent to how The Two Towers made me feel.

I don’t really understand where all the hate is coming from; I suppose a lot are hyperbolizing and nitpicking over where the story/ characters were taken (fair enough), but, in spite of its flaws, you’d really have to be a moof-milker to not recognize the film as a worthy addition to the saga, IMO.

Before Ep. IX comes out, I look forward to seeing what kind of reception the “fans” have in store for Shenmue 3 ;)

A lot of big players died early. This franchise has no future, imo.

Didn't know this movie was on blu-ray. I'm acquiring it right now using a completely legitimate method, but if I like it I'll probably head over to vudu on the 27th just so I can see how it sounds with dolby headphone atmos. Only time I was able to use it was with Overwatch and the positioning is pretty impressive.

Why wasn't Admiral Holdo an elderly Mon Mothma instead? And why isn't anyone else asking this question?

And no Lando cameo on the casino planet is a crime against humanity, and everyone knows it.

And now there's nothing left of either that First Order Ren cult, or the so-called Resistance. Still no idea what the relation of either is to what I assumed was some kind of New Republic formed by thousands of worlds after Return of the Jedi, so I'm left wondering what exactly is going on politically a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Also wondering how all those wealthy arms dealers are making so much $$$ off of literally 7 people, a mech, an X-Wing, and a Force poltergeist, apparently scuffling over a remote ball of salt.

However, I enjoyed the film. There were a lot of cool reimagined McQuarrie designs. But the music wasn't as memorable to me as the original or prequel trilogies. No stand-out tracks yet like Duel of the Fates, for example.

^ Your Mon Mothma suggestion is great (Laura Dern could’ve filled in for the actress as well); not to mention that as audience members already acquainted with the character, we might have given more of a shit about the Vice Admiral’s decisions and ultimate fate in the end.

A brief Lando appearance would’ve been perfect as well.
Something like:

Finn (who doesn’t know shit as a new member of the ‘resistance’) asks Maz Kanata for help finding a code breaker, who in turn directs him to Lando. After a roughly similar sequence of events on the casino planet, Lando finally pops up and says something like “sure, I’ll help you”… before chucking both Finn and Rose in jail….where they meet Benicio del Toro’s character. The rest is history. Lando is still a cool guy, and Benicio’s character makes more sense all of a sudden.

I’m fine with the sequence in the movie, but something akin to the above would’ve satisfied me more as a longtime fan.

Or, now check this out, how about throwing out both the casino subplot and Del Toro’s character because they were both completely fucking useless.

as a lifelong star wars fan, i thought TLJ was absolute garbage. i hated it. i thought force awakens was decent and i really enjoyed rogue one.

i still bought it on bluray (yes im part of the problem) and watched maybe half of it before turning it off. im really hoping they dont destroy Solo's legacy with this next one....

'Useless' is a generous descriptor. Are we still keeping the biggest plothole quiet?
That if you could apparently easily hyperspace back and forth from the capital ship space chase in a small shuttle to a faraway planet for days, and the carrier convoy being chased is full of an assortment of such small hyperspace-capable shuttles, fighters, even escape pods, that they could've simply just slowly evacuated all personnel back and forth, a few dozen at a time, to a multitude of planets. Maybe? Hmmm? No? Or like, call for help from thousands of small hyperspace-capable fascist-Resisting peeps from everywhere, who might approach the convoy unseen from the front and evacuate Resistors to a thousand different places? The First Order's gigantic ship can only follow one at a time, because, obviously, that monstrous packed Supremely Leading carrier couldn't spare a single fighter to track Finn's shuttle to Las Vegas for the weekend. This isn't just a plot hole. It's the plot singularity that may one day explain the Big Bang itself. Rian Johnson's script needs to be turned over to cosmologists for study.

I only just got around to watching this, I missed the initial release and the early impressions from my mates and people online put me off seeing it in the end.

I know a lot of people are pissed off but I enjoyed it immensely, I thought it was going to be a by the numbers palette swap of the original trilogy with better effects but I really appreciated having my expectations subverted.

There was a couple of things that are almost universally disliked; force Leia and the codebreakert subplot. The Leia thing definitely didn't need to happen so I didn't spend too long thinking about that. The codebreaker subplot is a bit more tricky as I think it does serve a few purposes.

I liked that the traditional gung-ho hail Mary plan failed, I like that as an arc it helped Finn develop from a terrified runaway into a real member of the resistance and yes I even liked the bit with the kids. In an ideal world I think that subplot required a re-write, one that incorporates the above but in a more concise manner.

In terms of what I liked about it there was too much for me to go into detail about, I am genuinely surprised by how many fans didn't like the movie, I know better than to argue with SW fans but the same people I spoke to that criticised Force Awakens for being too familiar in theme and structure are now complaining this is too alien.

Hard to say where history will land on this one, I remember being told that Empire had a significant amount of backlash from fans in its day. I suppose at the end of the day it's not really our Star Wars anymore, I'll find out what my son makes of it when he's old enough to watch these movies.

This video did a decent job of summarising what I liked about TLJ, it's worth a watch even if you don't agree with it.

Oh, right, one last clarification. I enjoy Star Wars no matter what, but there were 3 things I especially liked a lot about the TLJ, and they are ironically what most people hated most for reasons I don't yet understand. First, perhaps someone can explain why Leia using the Force to save herself from space death is so hated. That scene was really cool and exactly what we should expect Leia would be capable of after 30 years of knowing she's Force-sensitive. Why is it so ridiculous to use the Force to pull yourself back into a ship after being blown into a vacuum? I don't get this criticism at all. Luke uses the Force to zip around in the original trilogy all the time. Second, the only part of the movie worth anything was the casino. The entire movie should've been about a heist mission on the casino planet, except Finn teams up with the Jedi kids to overthrow all the rich imperial bastards, Temple of Doom style. Third, Luke's transcendence was spectacular. Jedis disappear when they die. It's what they do. The addition of a new exhausting Force projection ability is a natural progression from introducing the Force-grab and Force-telepathy in Empire. Luke should be able to impress after years in an ancient Jedi temple. The only issue I had with the scene is, again, something nobody mentions: that Luke's Force projection looked a lot like Chuck Norris.

What I hated about the film was wasting Captain Phasma and not telling me who the frell Snoke was and everything else I mentioned above.
