shenmue 3's music(?)

Postby redline » Tue Jun 19, 2018 8:03 am

i know there is quite a few fans of all the music used in shenmue. i was just wondering if there has been any talk on the music they are going to be using for S3(?)

is it going to brand new songs or are they using the shenmue online music? (as it was not really used)

i would love some new shenmue songs... maybe by ryuichi sakamoto :) (i know, never going to happen but i can dream =P~ )

There's supposedly hundreds of leftover tracks from Shenmue I and II that have never been heard. If I recall, Yu intends to use a mix of these and new compositions by the original composer in Shenmue III.

I'm a big fan of the Shenmue soundtrack. No wonder YS is (or was) also a musician.

As it is also said in the video above, things and tools in the music production realm have exponentially grown in the last 10-15 years; sample libraries have outstanding sound quality, virtual instruments are great and everything provides "perfect" audio quality at much lower costs and efforts than before.

I have mixed feelings about them using the old unused compositions as I believe scoring is done much better when a composer has pictures in his mind for a specific scene/moment, but I also believe they know what they're doing and they'll manage adapting the old material in a proper way.

There's already unreleased songs from both the original games we have access to that sound amazing, and there was a couple of new Ryuji Iuchi pieces that he shared on his soundcloud since Shenmue 3 announced that sound very Shenmue aswell, so I think it'll be a mix of new and old. I'm sure alot of the unused old music from back in the day was already made in advance for the next part in mind anyways, so I don't think you need to worry about the quality of the music and how it matches the game :)

You used to be able to listen to this piece of music on the official Shenmue 3 page, not sure when or why it was removed though, it doesn't seem to be there anymore :p

I'm eager to hear them too. In the video where Suzuki explains this issue he plays some tunes and you can feel that Shenmue feeling. I'm sure it won't dissapoint us.

My only concern is that with the old music vs the new music is that unless Iuchi has kept the same synth and MIDI sounds on his computer from the Shenmue 1 and 2 days, the new tracks will sound very different and create a clash. I hope for a consistent musical score that has a great variety as well regardless.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. This is a fairly recent piece by Iuchi and it still sounds like something right out of Shenmue.

It's yet to be proven/disproven, but I have a theory even the old compositions will be rearranged/re-recorded with modern synths/live instrument elements.

Yeah I've always been under the assumption that with "old unused tracks" they were mainly referring to the compositional aspect of those tracks, to be updated with modern higher quality sounds, rather than the just the old audio files or DAW project files.
Otherwise yes, the discrepancy could be too much.

It might be added to a playlist on the YouTube channel, but I don't think we're going to outright repost Iuchi-san's work and especially not without his permission.

Oh god, When i put this song on i closed my eyes and imagined vistas of Guilin with the title screen of SIII popping up with this song in the background and got goosebumps.

Once in a while u need a smack in the face to remind you that yes, Shenmue III is fucking REAL!
