I saw the first four episodes (I guess) of the first season. I haven't gotten around to watch the rest, maybe I'll try to take some time for it later on. To me, the series feels kind of "soap-like" in a way compared to something like Lord of the Rings. It's probably due to the more down to earth, political tone with power struggles, backstabbing etc. I expected there to be more mystery and action after seeing the opening sequence actually.
Lord of the Rings on the other hand is more high fantasy having a grander scale of fighting against dark forces. I myself prefer that more epic, otherworldly tone if I would have to choose. Middle Earth seems to be a more fleshed out entity in itself too. But again, they have two different angles.
PS Not using the soap reference as a negative. It's a well made series. I just couldn't find another way of describing how I kind of perceived it. The way plotlines go, the intrigues etc.
