Gymnastics tonight... It seemed to me that Great Britain got robbed of the silver, and Ukraine of the bronze. I don't know a lot about the sport, and I don't quite get what happened, but the last Japanese player essentially fell off the bar, which should have put Japan in fourth, with China in first, Britain in second, and Ukraine in third. The medals are all but awarded with lots of British and Ukrainian celebration. Next thing I know, I see the Japanese coach talking with the judges, he actually hands them a thick stack of cash (I laughed hard), and suddenly Japan gets silver, Britain gets bronze, and Ukraine gets nothing. What happened?

In all honesty it was probably the right decision. I think the whole problem was that Uchimura (the Japanese gymnast) was deducted the full amount of points for falling and failing to "dismount". However, he did actually land with two feet, so technically he did dismount successfully, just very very poorly, and the Japanese obviously felt that too many points were deducted. I don't know much about gymnastics but I think that's what it boiled down to yesterday.

Of course, it was such an anti-climax for team GB, and personally, I'm not a big fan of "appeals to the judges after the decision has been made". I'm kinda old school, generally I think whatever the first decision is should stand, even if it's a bad one. Think how crushing this must have been for Ukraine especially, to go from elation at getting a medal to nothing at all.

The only thing I am annoyed about in all this, is that now some people can't help but feel disappointed that GB didn't get the silver, when actually they should just be ecstatic we got Bronze. When we did initially know we had made bronze (without ever even hoping-let alone expecting- that Japan would mess up so dramatically) everyone was just over the moon. The last time we won a medal for team gymnastics at the olympics was 100 years ago, even the last time we qualified for the finals it was still 80 something years ago! The boys did unbelievably good and beat the odds. I was sure USA were gonna clean up yesterday, but it just wasn't their day.

I think that was the most exciting and painfully dramatic gymnastics I have ever seen. Now, it's all about Louis Smith going for a medal in the singles, come on son!

What was the money for, though? I wasn't kidding; the Japanese coach actually gave the judges money.

Haha, I just googled that now and found a vid of it on youtube . It looks bad, but apparently the person filing the appeal has to make a payment.

Yep if you win the appeal you get it back, i think if anything they should have been knocked up to 3rd cause it was a bad cock up despite landing on his feet.

Started to become depressing now hearing the Chinese and USA anthems so often and not ours. Come on team GB, I'm wearing a fucking gay Olympics tshirt for you and everything.

Women's gymnastics has gotten off to a fierce start. Those girls from the US team are looking hungry. I mean hungry for gold. You can see it in their eyes, like they just want to crush everybody. Looking real good so far.

Purposefully losing, so they would face easier opponents in later rounds.

That and to avoid their fellow countrymen. It was so blatant as well from the start.
Shame that the women's fencing was not sorted out correctly. Feel sorry for Shin A Lam who not only got screwed out of a chance for Gold but lost the Bronze because her appeal was rejected.

Fact is the clock messed up and she had it won so i don't know how they could give the other girl the point or not replay the last part?

Another gold for GB in the cycling time trial[got bronze as well]
