Real Locations

Postby IwaoHazuki » Wed May 28, 2003 4:17 pm

Well I just thought it would be cool to have a topic dedicated to actual Shenmue locations. I just dug up some pictures and info!

Aug 1945, Yokosuka, Japan. San Diego is the first allied warship to dock in Japan. Port side view.

Yokosuka Navy Base, Japan - A Japanese working party rigs the gangway as USS San Diego (CL-53) docks at Yokosuka on 30 August 1945, to take part in the U.S. occupation of that facility. Note details of San Diego's forward superstructure, including white counter-shading below horizontal surfaces. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.

This link is about a fire that took place on the Yokosuka harbor.

Funny you just posted this...I just posted a bunch of pics of Yokosuka, Dobuita and Yamanose over in the "Pics of Sakuragaoka and Dobuita" thread.

Is there any way to link or bring those images to this thread without having to repost everything?

 Sorry. I suppose the easiest thing to do would be to edit your post on the other topic and copy and paste the information into here.

Ah! Good idea. I should have thought of that! Hold on...OK, here goes...

I'm actually doing a search for Shenmue-related real life pics (I'm procrastinating at work), and check this pic out of the "Family Mart" in real life Sakuragaoka....hmmm...bears more than a passing resemblance to the Tomato Convenience Store, I must say:

A fox shrine in Yamanose where Megumi's kitten lives? I think so!

This looks familiar...a Dobuita building perhaps?
Image

It's glorious downtown Dobuita! Even the building architecture looks identical to what's in the game!

Bunkado Antique shop? Russiya China shop? You decide!

Yokosuka Harbor aerial view...even the overall layout looks somewhat similar.

Check out the links, I'm not sure I can post pictures from the site though, cause you can't link directly to pics:

Here is a URL to pictures of Yokosuka from a Naval website, mostly circa the late 1940's and early 50's.

http://www.anzwers.org/free/navyscpo/yo ... intro.html

Scroll down past the two pictures at the top and click on some of the links. Many of the hundreds of pictures on this site recall certain Shenmue locales. This one for instance:

http://www.anzwers.org/free/navyscpo/xmtrhill_big.jpg

It looks like the building on the top of a distant hill visible from Sakuragaoka (you can see a mountain from Sumiya-San's house when you're facing toward the dead end of the street. it's got a little building on it like the mountain in this picture does). Check it out if you don't know what I mean. (This particular link won't work, so just copy and paste it into your address bar to see the picture. That's the one that looks like the building on the top of the hill visible from Sakuragaoka.)

****This is all from a thread I wrote last September in the old forums. Check it out, good discussion: http://www.forumplanet.com/planetxbox/s ... tid=814962

They are the best looking environments I've ever seen in a game. Detail is found in every direction.
