Not helping the old lady!

Postby Pulse » Sun Jul 15, 2012 2:33 am

Guys, has any of you ever tried to not help the old lady to find the Yamamoto's House? How does it influence the game?

I don't think it does influence the game but I could be mistaken. Only thing that I think changes is that Ryo becomes slightly less neighborly. :P

He castrates himself and becomes a rodeo clown who on weekends sings in the catholic boys choir.

I did that a few years back.
The scene with granny asking for help will trigger again after some time. Maybe even the next day (game time), but I'm not sure.
Oh, and ofcourse this does not affect the ending or anything else in the game.

You don't have to do it at all. The first time I played I completely ignored it and nothing happened. And if you do it, nothing really happens. It's considered a side quest.

Lovely. I don't think he needs his balls anyway, given the way he interacts with the girls...

Nothing happens and correct me if I'm wrong but once you don't help her in first day the event is not triggered again

Its just a side quest that is not mandatory.

It shows you that you can look at certain things such as names on doors and such.

I believe it is just a way to make the game feel more lifelike.

Also, if you complete the search for the Yamamoto house, the old lady quotes that there are few gentlemen left that would be kind enough to help an old lady and this quote alone can be considered a preaching of the change of chivalry in the Japanese culture in the mid 80s.

Shenmue is famous for having small occurrences and symbolism that relate in a macroscopic way and this can be considered just one of the few of them.

There is absolutely no penalty to not doing this quest.

The very first time i played Shenmue, i was soo immersed in it, that i looked at a few nameplates before leaving the area to look for Yamamoto in the next area. But i forgot and continued exploring the game. When i remembered, i tried to find the old lady but she was gone.

I actually deleted the save file and started the entire game again, since i didnt want to miss a moment of it.

If you don't, then she is forced to live on the streets, where she picks up street smarts and learns how to survive on the streets with her fists, wits and one jagged knife she has named Widow's Revenge. She returns in Shenmue 3 to challenge Ryo to a knife fight to the death. And all because you couldn't take 5 minutes out of your day to help her.

Way to go, asshole.

There's never really any consequence for actions in Shenmue. I think there are four instances of triggering different events.

Not going to your job interview results in Goro phoning.
Fail to beat Chai and you miss out on a cut-scene.
Fail to beat the two annoyin whores and you miss out on a cut scene.
And the other is not meeting quota at the harbour or breaking a crate during a fight, which causes the "no bonus, stop bein a lazy cunt", and "that's comin out of your pay" speeches, respectively.
