Shiny plastic shiny plastic..matte?

Postby Bluecast » Mon Oct 22, 2012 8:33 pm

Me and Yukio talk about this often. Do you like electronic devices to be shiny or matte?

I like my TV/monitor that has a shiny bezel. Tablets, laptops, hand held gaming and such. Or even consoles. I prefer matte. It bugs me Nintendo loves shiny consoles. Sony is the same way. MS got it right when they changed 360 to matte IMO.

God how I hate the shiny. The finger prints shit gets on my nerves to no end. Its the only thing I wish I could change about my DS. An otherwise perfect games device.

Original DS does not have this problem. If it's something I have to touch, I want to not leave a fucking handprint on it. It's the reason I I left the plastic sheet on my netbook for so long and then covered it in stickers after it fell off. Otherwise I don't mind shiny bezel crap, but if I had a choice I would say matte.

Prefer the look of shiny, but prefer the practicality (not showing age, dirt, fingerprints, scratches etc. as much)* of matte. Kinda depends as well, I think some things do look better in matte (expensive hi-fi/home cinema components in matte black or matte silver look great). Conversely, this laptop with its matte black outer case and keys, some of the keys are showing their age and have been worn shiny, and I think they look great like that!

So yeah, in the "depends" camp.

*That made me look like some paedo groom-monger.

Matte on the slim 360 makes it looks like it's made of metal so I think it makes it look cooler and high tech. My PC has a matte rubber finish and again looks metal and high grade. Vita while I would like it Matte after playing with it some more still does look nice shiny. Tablets are best shiny despite the finger prints. Well the front anyway. Back it's better in matte or brushed metal. My PS3 looks like a chinese knockoff device.

I like my plastic to be matte, and my wood to be shiny. However, I like the metallic glassy look. It depends on the object, really, and the design.
