Lost that touch

Postby Jeff » Fri Nov 30, 2012 12:12 am

A month ago I turned the ripe old age of 29 (and will be 29 for the next few years). I pick up and play games from time to time and cant play with the sharpness, quickness, and efficientness As i could 10 years ago. I read that one starts to lose ones motor skills starts to errode at age 25, my question to you, as this online community is aging, did you find this about yourself as well? Is it a cause of getting older or due to playing alot less?

I think it's an age thing. I remember having a seemingly inhuman reaction time when I was a kid, dodging obstacles in later levels of Star Fox with only the slightest fraction of a second to see said object appear and dodge to avoid taking damage. (3D polygon type graphics were extremely immature at the time and things like viewable terrain distance and "Pop Up" of emerging objects were non-existant). These days I would trounce my younger self at real time strategy, but my former self would likely crush me at twitch games.

If anything, I became more impatient with games that take longer to complete. I used to hate the fact I couldn't get 40-50 hours off a single game.

Now I deride any game that takes longer than 8 hours to complete. Or even 4. I just don't have that much time to spend on them anymore.

Haven't really thought of it actually. But I feel the exact same way as Kenny does.Used to love long games when I was younger. Now I lose my patience if the game I'm playing is too long to the point where I either just don't finish it,or rush through it just to get it over with.

Probably will lose my patience even more later on as I'm 22 right now.

I have noticed slower reaction times on my part, but I think its nothing more than lack of practice in certain games. I play lots more games these days then the same 3 over and over so it makes for constantly changing learning curves in muscle memory.

Not as good as I once was, but I think that's just due to a lack of practice since I don't play games that much anymore, and it tends to be slower paced ones I do play. I was surprised how good at Trials HD I was though!

I'll tell you one thing that has gotten worse with age. My impatience to a certain degree and cursing.

I don't get the reference, but I remember when I was like 10 watching this movie in the theater. Seeing this clip makes me ask why Robin WIlliams? lol

The last game I completed fully was Max Payne 3, the character is older and from the same neck of the woods geographically, so when I won that game I felt like 'hell yea we're older but we got it done'. :P

So... That's why you're shit on Assassin's Creed. ;-)

I've actually got better through experience. The only thing I've gotten worse at is FPS games, because I've spent so long not playing them, and they've changed almost beyond recognition to me. Whenever I play one, I find myself forcing it into being a stealth game. I actually dropped outta those games when the mouse/RS started being used for looking. I could never get used to it.

One thing I will say though is that the Halo series managed to get the default sensitivity of the mouse/RS almost perfect. Most others I've been on are difficult to adjust to, and even harder to find the right setting. Then again, I enjoy patiently sneaking around and using melee weapons for silent takedowns or spending five minutes waiting for the perfect time to snipe each hostile one at a time.

But yeah, I'm awesome at games.
