Your favourite example of attention to detail in Shenmue

Postby ShenGCH » Wed Dec 19, 2012 8:15 pm

Just a quickie question, but I was just wondering if any of you guys 'n' girls have a particularly favourite example of attention to detail in both Shenmue games?

For the first Shenmue, mine would have to be the overall intricacies of the lives of the NPCs and how their dynamics change depending on the game's progression; and for Shenmue II, it'd have to be the fact that there are dentists in the game (in Kowloon) who are there simply for attention to detail. FRIGGIN' DENTISTS, YO!

I'd love to hear yours, so bring 'em on :D!

xx

They could've just put curtains up behind the Abe Store counter, but they didn't, they let you have a little nosey into her fucking living room.

To be honest, though, that woman is clearly slightly insanus, so putting up curtains is probably the least of her worries :P.

The what I assume is a weather station that's visible in Sakuragaoka.

There are some! I mean, a lot of things in these awesome games let me speechless... But right now i'm thinking of the titanic work done on the facial expressions and graphic detail on everyone!! Fantastic.

There are a lot of things I like regarding detail, including as has already been said, the dynamic of each NPC having a routine and a schedule, 7 years before Oblivion came out, which brags of having the same thing in it.

I suppose one of my favorites would be the entire existence of Nagai Industries. It's never told to you, but strongly implied that they're some kind of yakuza with a measure of power. Everything about that place, the camera at the front entrance, the fancy dressing of the people within, the implied code/respect that people have which make them almost scold Ryo for even going inside, all reeked of a richness of detail. This yakuza has absolutely nothing to do with the plot of either Shenmue 1 or 2, but the fact that it's even there is something I feel is missing from a lot of other games these days.

One thing that always fascinated me were the air conditioner units sticking out of houses, the boxes, the crates... the telephone wires... it made everything seem authentic.

Then of course... mindblowing details like being able to knock on every door, open every drawer... call whomever you wish in a way where you had to dial the numbers yourself...

Thankfully the team included the first person camera, even though it's a 3rd person game. It made us appreciate everything much better, and it shows they were well aware of it

everything. the entire tapestry of detail is insane.

perhaps the extended town that you can only see with mods/hacks.

the name plates on houses.

being able to enter every warehouse for no reason.

Gotta be putting in the actual weather from that time or that no NPC looks the same and all have their own daily lives.

Still say no game has come close to matching the details like Shenmue did.

When you pull on a light cord, it'll dangle for a few seconds.

The wind blowing clothes and hair...especially noticeable with Shenhua's dress in Shenmue 2. You can see her facial reactions and slight smiles in regards to things Ryo says. In the final scene, she places her hand on her chest and the camera really focuses on that, right before she recites that poem we read in the manual to Shenmue before even playing the game.

Good thread. Now somebody make a thread with the same subject but for games other than Shenmue. I wanna hear what shit is out there in other games that I might not have even heard of yet.

Very important detaißs were the background noises. They created a whole new atmosphere. That's also what made it so realistic.
