That's actually not far from the truth, looking at the future. Always on DRM. As things become more convenient and people use physical media less and less, the powers that be plan to implement their idea of ensuring all movies you watch have to check before they can play. When you go to watch a movie, it cross references whether or not you are "entitled" to watch said movie you paid for over an internet connection to their server and if all the stars line up between the player/internet connection/HDCP they let you watch the movie. Hollywood in general looks to be moving in this direction in the next generation of home video, selling it to consumers as a convenience for not having to swap discs despite being a trojan horse of shackles underneath.
It would not surprise me at all if tying games to consoles is the way the gaming industry is moving in as well. On the contrary, with development costs rising next generation and developers screaming bloody murder at Gamestop for not paying a cent of used game sells to them, I suspect the dwindling 3rd party developers that remain are pressuring the consoles makers to do this. They want you to buy New, where they always get their cut.
