That compilation above is beautiful ;( watching it reminds me of why I love the series. The beauty of Shenmue is that it makes you appreciate the most obscure things in the game, from the rare pieces of dialogue with npcs to the crunchy sound Ryo's footprints make as he walks through the snow.

Well, Ryo's father dies on November 29th, 1986, but the end of Shenmue II is not fixed and can occur at any time; even earlier if you finish Shenmue quickly and use the save import option so the dates match. If, however, you decide to go for a clean slate with Shenmue II, the game begins on February 23rd, 1987, with a fixed bad ending of June 31st, 1987, but that's still no indication of a fixed ending for the game.

Playing disc 2 of S1 at the moment and just got the picture of Iwao with Zao Sun Ming.
On the back the kanji reads Bailu Village.
And thats a location now confirmed to us by the Shenmue 3 kickstarter..
So there we go!

You're quite right - there's no way of calculating this as obviously there isn't a canon end-date for S2 - every player's is going to be different. We'll have to wait to see what date Shenmue III starts, as I'm guessing it will start the same day that Ryo and Shenhua go to the cave...

i was just playing lucky hit in shenmue 2 - the one with the move scroll prize on dragon street - and my marble actually got stuck between some of the nails!

the owner says something like ' oh dear, this board is very old, that one doesn't count' and it gives you another go.

i must have played thousands of games of lucky hit and this has never happened to me before.
