Shenmue GDC Chapter Tiles Discussion- 45 minutes Video

My latest discussion video regarding the tiles seen at GDC for each chapter.

Disregard the Baihu stuff as we dubunked it since the video.

Apologies for the quick production quality, had no time to edit and post process.

Lot of cool information. From what I saw a lot of it is a giant recap of what the dojo and 500k has already speculated, though there was some (to me) some new insightful information that I wasn't aware of. Very interesting. A little unnecessary vulgarity, but over all I think it is a great discussion.

I think that VF RPG was more about Akira/Ryo's journey, but the transition into Shenmue made it more about the mysticism behind the mirrors, ChiYou, etc., so a lot of the tiles could, potentially, be obsolete. The ones your mate mentions towards the end are probably the most relevant to the current incarnation.

You only have to consider the fact that these are eleven chapters. Eleven chapters became sixteen, then back down to eleven. We're already up to chapter 6, meaning we only have five remaining (or seven, if this is excluding 2 & 5)

Tile 1 is Chapter 1
Tile 2 is Chapter 4
Tile 3 looks like Chapter 7; and (strangely enough...)
Tile 5 looks like Chapter 6.

With so much chopping and changing, adding and subtracting, we can't really put too much stock into these. Especially considering a recent Suzuki interview (and when I say recent, I mean in the last few years) has essentially revealed that he's constantly working on it, conceptually.

Where's the important white leaf? Where's the Dragon Mirror? Why so much of Ren and only one shot of the Phoenix Mirror? To me, this just says one thing... VF RPG is not Shenmue. Not in story, at least. Enough focus was shifted to add more, which means that there was enough to subtract too. In my opinion, at least.

But yeah, thos tiles your mate mentioned seem like the only ones that would definitely be included in the Shenmue story. Everything else just seems a little... out of place.

I kinda agree with MITT3NZ. I've been speculating on what we've seen in the mostmortem because it's fun, but I also think that if Suzuki had even a shred of hope that he would one day release new Shenmue games he wouldn't have shown us all that art from future games. So all of this was probably the preliminary story which changed long before we got Shenmue 1 and 2.

You could totally be right. I even mentioned that in the video, that these could all just be VFRPG tiles and not represent Shenmue at all. But its still fun to poke around and figure stuff out.

Great video, I agree with a few others in that, as said it probably was from the VF rpg era but you brought up some real interesting points and I'm ashamed to admit that I had never seen the 6 shenmue 3 images from years ago
