First magazine to cover Shenmue & when did you hear about it

Was wondering today when I first heard about Shenmue. I remember seeing a magazine in the supermarket with what I'm sure was this image on the cover:



I was reading this article (http://uk.ign.com/articles/1999/07/14/shenmue-the-history) to see when it would have come out, I'm guessing Xmas '98/early '99? Really wish I could remember what magazine it was, it really changed my life. I became obsessed with this game and the Dreamcast, I remember seeing in the magazine the screenshots of the orphanage/church in Hong Kong with the Virgin Mary statue and being blown away by the graphics.

When and how did you guys first hear about Shenmue?

Must have been this early 99 issue of the German Sega Magazin.
I don't have it anymore but it was just a bit of information about the game with some early beta shots.



Reminds me of that glorious time when the Dreamcast came out. The knew Sega was going down somehow though. I had a subscription to this magazine and just before the launch of the Dreamcast they cut down the magazin to only about 20-25 pages, gave it a cheap paper cover and I got it in the mail with the Maniac.

An old 1999 magazine called Tips and tricks. I wish I still had that article. It was very brief, but it showed Ryo and him on the bicycle. I specifically remember that.

I forgot what magazine it was but there was a very small piece about a Virtua Fighter RPG that really got my attention.

I hadn't heard about ti since I was pretty young at the time and didn't follow video game news. My parents bought it for me at a local flea market.

somewhere in mid or late 99 there was this gameshow here that showed trailers of what would be both shenmue 1 and 2 and I couldn't believe it's graphics like anyone at that time couldn't at tokyo game show 99 audience requested to see what was beneath the sega booth as they couldn't believe the dreamcast was running that game. downgrade my ass back then

I had read a little about it on ign. But when an issue of Dreamcast magazine came, it had a demo disc that had a video introducing shenmue. I must of watched it 100 times

I was checking through my small collection of old video game magazines a few months back and I have a March '99 copy of Hyper magazine(an Aussie gaming mag), which includes a small blurb about Shenmue. That would probably be the first time I saw Shenmue mentioned.

I *think* it was an issue of Computer and Video Games (long since dead sadly), I remember looking at the screenshots and thinking it looked amazing, and knew that I wanted it straight away. But I also remember that DC mag that Peter just posted, think I still have that somewhere in fact...kinda funny how Niao Sun was the face of a lot of the promotional material despite not appearing in either of the first two games...will be crazy to finally meet her in S3

Back in the days of Gamespot being connected to Gamefaqs and looking for ways to get the desired Chao I wanted by visiting the Sonic Adventure 2 boards, I would notice a picture for the game with the name 'Shenmue' linking from Gamespot on the front of the Gamefaqs page. The name stuck with me as I thought it was strange.

A few months later my friend showed me this game his uncle pirated for him on the Dreamcast and it instantly stuck with us. He got an Xbox for Shenmue 2 and the rest is history.

It was the TV series Game-Pad with Violet Berlin. They either did a review of Shenmue 2 or a feature of Yu Suzuki. That was the first time I saw the game..

I think it was CVG, they did a piece on Project Berkley. The one to really cover it well though was the Official UK Dreamcast magazine. I remember them showing images at the time that never showed up in Shenmue 2 (this was before its release.) Like Ryo & Ren falling off the scaffolding on to the van just before they leave for Kowloon.
