That's where I've seen some people get "confused", and think that it's just a gimmick to give Ryo a generic wardrobe which I don't think is the case.

In my mind it's just a fun side element to include a little customisation element in an age where people love making games their own, and that it will be a bunch of Shenmue related clothes, like say, "hey you ever wanted to see Ryo wearing Lan Di's kimono? Well here ya go!", or basically other clothing seen in the series, worn by the characters.
