KS. Update #18 - Interview with Kenji Miyawaki

Postby code l name » Mon Jun 29, 2015 4:11 am

Hello Everyone!

Shenmue has a diverse and huge cast of characters. Hundreds of unique personalities, each with their own story, each going about their own lives in the world of Shenmue. Giving these people shape and breathing life into them was artist and designer Kenji Miyawaki. His work with the character concepts and character design helped populate Shenmue with many of the colorful and unforgettable characters that made the story so inviting.

In today’s interview, Miyawaki-san gets into how he had come to work for Sega, what it was like being involved in the production of Shenmue, and elaborates on how a certain character came about. Please welcome, Kenji Miyawaki!

Neat update. I am curious in the interview he alludes to the following pictures;

Saying this content was cut from final version of Shenmue (I'm assuming he meant Shenmue 2) as it didn't work with games flow. The community long speculated this was footage from early version of Shenmue III on Dreamast. I guess it may not be the case.

I always assumed it was cut content from Shenmue II. It was probably meant to end after Bailu Village but they stopped just before you get there for whatever reason.

Well, those circular huts kinda look like the baisha concept art.

It's nice to see someone talk about those infamous old screenshots. And I never knew Shenhua was originally designed to be tibetan. That explains some of the old artworks then.

Maybe Ryo was supposed to pass through there before meeting shenhua? to me it always seemed like a big jump between 'Green field' and 'Muddy stream', (i think thats what they were called).

This is the weirdest thing! All of Yu's Japanese colleagues seem to have the same voice and speak perfect English! :beamup:

I like these interviews though.

I wonder if the later games will still have some gameplay in Tibet? Could be an interesting bit of scenery, especially given some of its winter environments.

Either way, it's good to see he'll still be working on the third game. He's a good artist, so I'm sure new characters will still be able to fit perfectly into the series.

This is really interesting as it talks about those mystery screenshots from years ago! Guess that scene won't be a part of Shenmue III then. You get a real insight into the order of how the whole thing was put together, with him talking about how he first drew Shenhua and how Xiuying was the first fully fledged character. Interesting to note it's meant to be in Tibet etc.
