New to Shenmue

Postby Aenae » Thu Jul 09, 2015 7:04 pm

Hi! I am totally new to Shenmue but I loved everything I have read about it so far. I recently supported Shenmue III and I can't wait to play it!

I am wondering how I in the best/easiest way can get the backstory information I need to be able to enjoy Shenmue III fully? Should I watch all the cut scenes from the first game on YouTube (does it exists for Shenmue II as well?), or what should I do to get to know all the story of the game I need up to Shenmue III?

I have never really jumped into a game without being there from the start, so I am not really sure how to do it the best/easiest way and would like some help.

Sorry if this isn't the right sub-forum for my question.

I'd suggest playing 1 and 2. You've got two and a half years. 8)

Yeah. Definitely get yourself a Dreamcast and buy 1 and 2 and play them. Preferably both games from the same region, so you can transfer your save file from one game to the other without hassle.
Don't spoil them by watching the cutscenes on youtube. Just play the games, you'll be glad you did!

This is the time when you wish SEGA had already released Shenmue 1 & 2 HD on Steam. :) But they haven't. Hope soon they will.

Download the discs and play it on nulldc, the closest to Shenmue HD at the moment.

Also you can run the game at double triple speed (useful in the first game if you don't want to wait).

If you have a bit of money,

a used Sega Dreamcast console off of ebay.
Check your TV or PC monitor, and if it has a VGA input, then buy a Dreamcast VGA cable. If not Then you would have 2 choices; to settle with poor visuals, or also buy a HDMI upscaler or converter which would take the VGA quality and make it work on your HD TV.
A copy of Shenmue.

Im not sure where you are from, buy you are talking £60-£80. Or maybe $100?

But its beyond worth it.

There's quite a number of glitches when playing Shenmue 1 and 2 with NullDC I found, like you have to turn off shadows and stuff so Ryo's head doesn't disappear leaving his eyes lol.

But yea, ideally i'd suggest playing them both properly on Dreamcast.

The only other thing you could do is watch shenmue the movie, which is most of the major cutscenes from the first game, and play Shenmue 2 on the xbox 360 or even better original xbox (cause there's a few glitches playing it on the 360, like music cutting out and stuff)

Well, recap videos are being made for Shenmue 3 so if you want just the gist of the story you only have to wait for Shenmue 3. But recap videos in video games never tell you all you need to know.

If you got time then go through the dreamcast route, however you might not want to be buying stuff from various people online just to experience the game, and that's fine because not everyone is a retro gamer. In that case you can watch cutscene movies people create.

From Shenmue Dojo:

There's some available for the second game also but not from Shenmue Dojo as far as I can tell.

Best way as others have already said is to invest in a Dreamcast + Shenmue 1 & 2. Highly recommend you buy the PAL/European versions.

What exactly is a VGA cable?

I've been trying to find a way to make my Dreamcast much clearer through my TV.
I currently use the Dreamcast scart cable, but the picture doesn't appear to be that great.

Does a VGA cable make the Dreamcast games appear crystal clear through a TV screen?
How would you say is the best way to get hold of one?

Fantastic! Thank you very much for posting that video, most appreciated!

Would you possibly know the best way and cheapest way to obtain these items?
I'm assuming eBay or Amazon but just wondered if anyone knew of any cheaper websites or places to obtain both of those pieces of kit?

Thanks
