Game Informer Shenmue Chronicles Playthrough

Postby sand4fish » Fri Jul 10, 2015 12:46 am

Numerous people in Game Informer's community sent in requests for complete Super Replay playthroughs of the first two games in the Shenmue series. They caved in and started playing the first hour of Shenmue, being a first hands-on experience for one of their staff, Kyle Hillard, and if we all show enough interest they will continue their journey through both Shenmue games until the end. It's our chance to hype this game through a gaming outlet besides Gametrailers, and so let's show our support!

PS. They have only one rule for the show: No talking over the cutscenes.

Why even have a rule if you're just going to break it?

I watched this and the people of this site rated Shenmue with 7.5/10. It seems the rating is so, because they can't even handle the D-Pad...

Shenmue needs patience, spatial/environmental recognition, focus on world/characters, emotional affection and a certain kind of intelligent.

And it seems these people are lacking those, therefore they can't comprehend/embrace it and/or they're spoiled by guided constant action games.

I've played the game when I was 10, never thought the game had bad controls (except for the default L running).

Don't even know how they got that camera angle in the house, maybe I just lack attention while playing now.

First time I played Shenmue the controls were awful. You get used to it.

I actually just had the time to watch the entire thing, and I was a bit frustrated they couldn't get a hold on the camera controls and when they didn't know if a situation could be interacted with. It seems they simply ignored the existence of the bottom right of the screen.

I'm not happy with the comment about the rating of 7.5 but unfortunately this is the reality of modern gaming, where everyone is used to handhold tutorials and goals with clear directions on a map. We only can hope they will take the time to understand and appreciate the mechanics of the game.

I think the control scheme was the one area that Yu didn't understand the direction the industry was going. The controls just never seemed intuitive. You got used to them sure, but when you play a few other games and then come back you have to re-familiarize yourself with the controls. My 14 year old cousin wanted to play it last night(She's heard me talk about it so much) and she had fun, but it was painful watching her run into walls or not be able to read things without moving to a better position.

Homer of the comments I'm seeing for this are positive. Why do you guys act like they're mostly negative?

They are certainly not negative at all. I'm just a bit worried by how it looks from a first-time viewer's perspective on how clunky Shenmue might look and gamers being put off by it.

In the end, this is all good as we can only get to add more believers, as fans are already all on board by now.

Why people run into walls? The controls of Shenmue are not something to get used to, but ones to understand how they work. Once you understand them, no matter what other game you play and how many years was the last time you played Shenmue, you will immediately control it correctly.

Are people not aware that there are diagonal directions, too? It seems they only push the 4 directions buttons, but not the 8 directions, too. The diagonal buttons make Ryo turn 45 degrees, so there is not excuse for someone to run into walls. And that said, there are games, too, in that era, that make use of the D-pad and their controls are inferior to Shenmue.

Lastly, and as said, it requires spatial/environmental recognition. Before you move on, you have to think the sequence of the directional buttons you will push to going through, especially in tight spots. Really, the controls are just alright (and ones that make the movements realistic).
