Dreamcast with VGA cable, no sound!

Postby Ryno4 » Fri Jul 10, 2015 10:19 am

Hi guys. I'm new to this so I hope I'm in the right place.

I recently bought a dreamcast so I could play Shenmue again now that the 3rd game has been announced.

It came with a standard connection (into the antenna slot) and I was advised to purchase a VGA cable as a cheap option to improve the visual.

I bought one and it it came with the 15 prong attachment, along with 1 red labelled wire and 1 white labelled wire attached to it, for sound I'm presuming. ( in not too good with technology)

After trying to attach all of the wires to all of the holes, I'm failing to get any sound. The visual quality is a massive step up, I'm just struggling to get the sound to do anything.

I have tried it on two TVs, a Samsung LE32B450 and a Philps 39PFL3807T/12. They both had he same problem.

I don't know whether the wire is faulty, or whether I'm doing something wrong.

The wire also came with a VGA gender changer, and some sort of splitter. I'l would attach photos. But I can't figure out how to do it on here. If anyone could give me some advice I'll be very grateful.

Cheers, Ryan.

I think I need to plug both of the cables into the splitter, and just buy. 3.5 to 3.5 cable to put into a port names VGA input. Worth a shot

Sorted it. Just needed a double ended 3.5mm jack to go from the splitter to the TV.

Now let's go and find some sailors.

VGA cables don't carry audio signals, only visual. It can be slightly misleading considering it has V and A in there (often assumed to stand for Visual and Audio, respectively), but it's Video Graphics Array. DVI cables are known to be capable of carrying an audio signal, but it depends on the port itself whether it will actually send/receive in the first place.

But yeah, whenever using VGA, you need audio jacks for the sound.

Yeah thanks for the advice. I stumbled across the solution by process of elimination.

All sorted.

Same with S-Video. You have to use either 3.5 or the white and red composite connectors.

I purchased one pretty similar to this from a UK seller.

I didn't need the gender changer, but the splitter was used to put the red and white wire into.

I had to buy the 3.5 to 3.5 separately. 49p from CPC. Much cheaper than maplin, they wanted £11!

I've noticed that they also sell the splitter with a 3.5 male connection coming straight from it, rather than having a female connection and having to by a male to make wire, like I had to.

49p inc tax, free standard delivery.

Sorry I seen this late bud. Should have fired me a message. Yea I have a VGA box and not a cable (I need the blue ended cable to run from the box to the tv. But my box also has a 3.5mm output connection, so I just run my old Beats headphone cable from the box to my HDMI upscaler, then that goes into my tv. Pretty cluttered but worth it.

It does sound pretty cluttered, but as long as it is all hidden by the TV then it's not a problem! I've got my wires for each console cable tied so they look neater and they are easily distinguishable.

I just made it onto disk two disk won't work without any problems despite my worries. I was looking forward to reliving the story, as I had forgotten a lot of it, as well as forgetting secrets. I keep seeing spoilers on the kickstarter trailers! Like finding the *EDITED TO AVOID SPOILERS* after bashing through a wall. I've decided I'm not going to look at anything else
