Upon closer inspection Esppiral's video, he does have the same vertical black bars on the sides. My mistake.

Awesome! This was the holy grail of cheat codes or hacks for the game. I can't believe this has finally been found!

could someone please incorporate this into an optimized version of the kogami undub.

i was never able to get my dreamcast to read kogami's original version of the undub.

shenmue 2 pal version would also be nice.

so this mod just manipulates the 4:3 image to make it appear less stretched in widescreen, or does this actually include the extra geometry?

It looks like it widens the FOV from the pictures, rather than crop the top and bottom. So it's the result we want - holy grail of retro gaming. 8) \:D/

Someone over on the assembler thread mentioned that the codes will work without an enable code.

This makes sense, I guess. The purpose of an enable code is to provide a hook point for the cheat device to re-apply the same code at a regular interval. (For example, if you had an infinite time code for a game, this would keep setting the time to 0) I didn't realize this when I hacked the code, but the memory region patched happens to be part of the game executable so the code doesn't need to be re-applied.

There was some interest in automated patching, so I'm going to look into writing a tool that will apply it directly to compatible games. I'll post here when I've got something ready, might not be this weekend but hopefully in the next week.

I tried it without the enable code and the widescreen code does work on the undub. This is on actual hardware. I'll have a video recording up soon. :D

I did some verification tonight, and it turns out that the address being patched is not part of the executable as previously suggested. The contents of memory in the area being modified doesn't come close to matching anything in 1ST_READ.BIN.

I'm still going to look into actual patching of the games, but it's going to take a bit longer since the existing codes can't be patched in directly.

I tried Shenmue 1 EU UNDUB EMU on demul and it worked, while it still has pop in's outside of the 4:3 areas, it looks a crap load better than playing it on null dc with extra geom, the lan di vs iwao dream sequence looked perfect since there were no backgrounds there. Close as we are ever gonna get to Shenmue HD.

this is great, geometry pop-in is significantly less, and it can be played on original hardware. what a breakthrough.

Can this hack be used via emulation? The wide screen trick with nulldc has too many geometry issues that ruin the experience.
