Gametrailers include Shenmue 3 in its 2015 greatest moments.

Both Michael Huber and Kyle Bosman from Gametrailers have spoken on different aspects of why Shenmue 3 was a top highlight of the year (and who can blame them!) Here are the respective videos:

Honestly, until E3 this year I never payed much attention to this new version of GameTrailers. I dismissed them as just another games reviews website; a curious holdover from the days before YouTube became the primary means for releasing new video game trailers. However, after seeing Michael Huber's reaction to the Shenmue 3 reveal I really do have to commend GameTrailers for their earnest passion, both for gaming in general and towards Shenmue specifically. It’s refreshing to find people in the media still excited for the future gaming, as opposed to so many other internet personalities who want to only wallow in cynicism.

Years from now people will look back and seek to understand why the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter is one of the most profound moments in the history of gaming. It might be hard for people in the future to grasp that moment in time, not having been watching Sony's conference live to experience that pure joy first hand. Still, if there's any chance of conveying the significance of that event, when people all over the world celebrated the return of Shenmue, it's through a video of the GameTrailers' Shenmue 3 reaction. There’s something about the way Michael Huber (along with the rest of the GameTrailer’s panel) reacted to the news that really captured the energy of the moment.

Will there be a "mobile" vs "real" games feud ??

I get the market, there's a lot to be won by less to be done.

I've played SI on reicast. Touch screen controllers are not good (for most games).

That's why DS good games were good on DS, the same goes with some Wii games.

Still need to slap my face twice per day to remind this isn't a dream. The E3 reaction was a bomb, helped by the S3 fake mockup first and Yu's forklift pic after.

I watched/listened more than a hundred of podcasts about E3 2015 founded in Youtube or Google in my country. I was surprised to see the number of youtubers who have played Shenmue and were sincerely fans (actually between 10 and 20 channels). Globally, almost all the youtubers expressed happiness or their pleasant surprise, meaning they reflect respect or even admiration to the franchise. Of course, half of them also debated the legitimacy of the kickstarter.

Another detail that amazed me, the misinformative english-speaking videos got usually as much as thumbs down than thumbs up. It's not the case of the popular channels who trash-talked the game but you can feel that the negative comments are some kind of anti-conformism thinking, meaning that Shenmue is really embedded in the pop culture in a positive way and has become something that you like to criticize freely because it's a social phenomenon that you can't stop.

I also found out that one of the main leaders of MO5 (the association taking charge of the retrogaming section at Paris Games Week 2015) is Douglas Alves. He's a well-known French Sega specialist, journalist, video games history teacher and a Shenmue fan. Some of you are subscribed to his twitter. He's very well informed as he talked to many Japanese developers including Suzuki during his career. He also predicted the Shenmue III announcement on PS4 few months before the E3.

Just to say, if you do the sum of all these Shenmue ambassadors on the web, plus your friends and colleagues, the word of mouth can only get better until Shenmue 3 release.

I want to express that the only negative thing (inner cringiness) in these videos was Kyle Bosman's description of Shenmue as a game with the central activity of lifting boxes. Probably he felt it would be less embarrassing for him to agree with the popular misinformed belief, than state what he witnessed (and confessed) during Huber's playthrough of Shenmue 1 and 2, haha. However, in overall, GameTrailers is a sunshine (as of now) in the gaming media when it comes to Shenmue.

Also, let's not forget about this!

Nice to see some positive media about Shenmue 3.

I keep hearing people who don't like Shenmue calling it a "mistake".

For who? It isn't a mistake for fans who've wanted a continuation for 15 years, it isn't a mistake for Yu Suzuki who's always wanted to keep working on his masterpiece series, it isn't a mistake for SEGA because they have no investment in the game, it isn't a mistake for Sony either because they have no major stake in it either. So who is it a mistake for?

Armchair analysts who think they know best.

The majority of the people who have shown a real investment in tearing Shenmue down are saying crap like "it's a mistake" because, deep down, they're mad that something that has a positive message and interpretation of the cultures it strives to portray overall is coming back on the market and making everything they worship look like the insults they actually are. They make my stomach turn.

I was a part of the GameTrailers community from around early 2007 till about 2013. Their site went from all sorts of great community related capabilities to being a shell of what it once was. I still go back occasionally, but for the most part, their site has been broken on some front or another for years.

That said, I was happy to see the reaction that came from some of their staff when the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Announcement Trailer started showing at E3. I would bet that most of us here on this forum had similar if not more muted reactions. I myself had my eyes peeled to the computer monitor, my mouth was slack jawed and I held my breath like if I were to breath normally, I would wake up from the dream. After Suzuki-san walked off the stage I sat in front of my computer monitor stunned and in the midst of disbelief.

I eventually came back to my senses and looked up the Kickstarter information. I had never donated to a Kickstarter campaign before so after looking into it and really... REALLY wanting to be a part of this, I quickly texted my wife telling her what was happening. She remembered how much I enjoyed Shenmue from my Dreamcast days (we've been together a long time), and she said to put down $100 for my birthday gift so my name could be in the credits and I could have a copy. Yeah, I have a great wife. I later put $13 towards the PayPal campaign to get the soundtrack as well.

When it comes to gaming, 2015 will be remembered by me as the best E3 in the history of E3's with the Shenmue 3 announcement alone. The year the impossible happened. I just want to take a second to once again thank all of the fans that backed this project in order to make this happen. The continuation can't release soon enough for many of us. Hopefully the time goes quickly.
