Shenmue 3 Isn't Going to Be Ready for a Long, Long While Yet

Yu Suzuki tells us where it's at

Yesterday, Shenmue III celebrated its first Kickstarter anniversary with a short video from series creator Yu Suzuki. "Your cheers at the Sony announcement still ring in my ears," says the veteran developer, before going into detail about how the project is progressing.

According to Suzuki, things have "really taken off" over the last six months, with key members of the development team now on board. "Battle and facial expressions are coming together, and cheers from the crew are growing. It makes me feel it will turn out to be a good game," he continues.

Overall, Suzuki seems very positive, which is obviously what we want to see, but judging from his words, it's safe to say that the game's got a very, very long way to go before we see it release. As such, Suzuki ends the video by asking fans to continue their support.

So, when do you think Shenmue III will launch? 2017? 2018? 2025? Place your bets in the comments section below.

Not too keen on the editorialising over the release when it's been made clear over and over that December 2017 is their proposed launch window. Not that I think it'll make that window, but all the same seems a bit shitty to throw the game under the bus by planting ideas that go against what the developers have said.

That said, nothing to get in a fuss over.

It's far from the shittiest article about the anniversary update. Game Informer's article takes the crown on that one, which is shoddy, lazy, uninformative, tries to put words in Yu's mouth, brings up the PayPal backer confusion (which the media created), and negatively tries to portray the game from the title onward. There are people who believe the anniversary update is the FIRST post-KS update because of the wording of the article.

Being a games journalist must be so fucking easy. I don't think I've seen a profession with such a relaxed grasp on properly informing the public.

The game still has 1.5 years of development time... and look how far they came since MAGIC last February. I think there's a decent shot of making Xmas 2017.

Software development projects spend a lot of time in the planning stages and progress quickly through the implementation stage. The experimentation and decisions in the direction game elements are going will take the longest. Of course the scale of the game will likely make it difficult to stop improving on X,Y & Z as well as the length overall. I reckon throughout the next year much more obvious progress will be visible so if he is happy with how it is going while it may look like positive marketing things may actually be progressing ok.

Well, of course since December 2017 is still a long ways away. I know when the game is released, we will have the best what Suzuki and his team did based on the money we game him to make it happen. We have waited 14 years with NO news or updates. Now that we know it is happening on OUR money, it is going to happen. Money is time and time is money.

The fact that Shenmue III even has a 2017 release date is a dream come true. I waited 15 years for this game, I can wait one more year.

In a way, Shenmue taught us to be patient and never give up. Even outside of the actual game, Shenmue teaches us those values :)

My dreamcast died, nullDC is filled with glitches and SEGA refuses to release a HD port for current consoles/PC.

I think Yu should really make an effort to make it inside the December 2017 window but if he really needs more time to complete the game, I'd be absolutely willing to wait for a couple more months. Obviously it takes a long time for a company like YS Net to complete a project as large as S3.Yu does not have 300 people working on this project simultaneously this time.

Just buy another DC? They are, what, the price of a new game? Worth it for the joy it gives you.

I never liked to import hardware. It's pretty rare where I live.
