I would give some credit considering Blit Software on the task is a strong possibility. Two years appears very long though, would be rather a pretty small team if it's true.
That would depend entirely on how many assets had to be recreated and how good the source code is. HD Remasters are harder than people think. Especially ones where they actually put effort into and want to get it right. I've heard real horror stories from people about certain HD projects. Some of these games are built on very old engines no longer compatible with current OS/hardware, a lot of technical wizardry had to be implemented to get these games working, it's not just a simple ROM dump with texture filtering and HD processors doing the rest. Some of the people who made these games are no longer available to contact, fallen off the face of the earth or not willing to help (which has happened). Nobody wants another Sonic Adventure botch job. This is Shenmue 1 and 2, these are
big games which had massive teams working on them. If you look at the work of Square-Enix, they took various approaches - FFX HD was half remake, half remaster, Type 0 was a straight up remake with the guise of "HD Remaster", same goes for Kingdom Hearts HD releases and FFXII is actually a good example of a nice looking HD remaster, assets cleaned up. Then there's Capcom's remasters for RE1 and RE0 which had two different sources they used to recreate the games (0 assets were intact, whereas RE1's had to have new backgrounds created).
Makes you wonder how they will do it for Shenmue, depends on their budget but if the suggestion is that it's taken two years, might mean that whoever is doing it, wants it done
right. Last thing we need is a Silent Hill HD Collection botch job, right?
