With all the resolution debate madness lately and the 4k debate....

PS4 neither Xbox One shouldn't struggle to run a direct port of Shenmue I & II at 4k, Sega should tweak some world and hud textures and make it widescreen, do a direct port, advertise it as first 4k console game ever.

Does not look better than my average Psx game, don't know why it is releasing on an inferior platform, Metal Gear Solid looks miles better, imagin Shengmu running on the mighty Psx, that would be like real life grafix.

His next video should be recorded using Reshade (SSAO, GI, DOF, Lens flare, bloom) when do it right it gives the game a new dimension, almost like playing a remaster.

I've been mession around with it an the Screen Space ambient occlusion alone makes the game 100% more beautiful.

Notice the contact soft shadows that Ryo ( and everything actually) casts to the environment.

Making our own HD remaster with Reshade.

EDIT, SORRY I posted by accident the post is still under construction.

HI!

Since it seems those HD remaster we are waiting for will never come to fruiction, I was wondering, what we could do to improve even further the games ( appart for making them widescreen :))

First thing that came to my mind is, well a simple HD remaster would feature some kind of improved lighting, and some "modern" tecniques such as Screen Space ambient occlussion or depth of field, someting that happened to Code Veronica HD.

So I first knew about reshade not so long ago, it is a PC tool that allows you to inject some sort of cool post proccesing effects to any game, the thing is it needs acces to the z buffer in order to inject the most advanced effects, such as the before mentioned SSAO and Depth of field, and whenever I read about it everyone would tell me that the Dreamcast does not have a z buffer nor any Dreamcast emulator. so it was impossible.... well... It turns out they were mistaken.

Both Demul and NulldC have z-buffer and Reshade can actually make use of it to inject advanced postprocessing effects.


You will need Reshade (I use Mediator for convenience)

So set up everything.
In demul you should select the directx 10 plugin in order to make it work.
In nullDC you should set the z-buffer option to D2468 mode 2 (lower precision) otherwise Reshade will not have access to the z-buffer.

Once you have everything in place just add the emulator to Reshade and tweak anything you want at your will.

The most impressive effect you can actually add to the game is SSAO, you have different options HBO, SGI SSAO etc, it uses the depth buffer to determine objects that are close to each other and makes them project a soft shadow, it gives depth to the game and personally it is pretty impressive,

Could you post either a shader profile or a screenshot of the settings you have enabled and levels of intensity? I can get certain things to work, but things like DoF, motion blur, HDR don't work well at all for me. I got SSAO working decently but it looks a lot better in your images.

Phenomenal work though, thank you for sharing with us!

Just tried it out. Your gonna need a BEAST of a system in order to run this. However, I was doing this on DX11 where the instructions say DX10 so that could be the reason. Its pretty simple to use. Just download the .Exe and run it. Point it towards the Emu your using. Run the emulator and press Shift+F2. This will pull up the configuration settings. Just make sure you create a profile first. Cant make any changes before you do it.

Yup, it needs a lot of resources, but tweaking things can lead to great results at low performance cost.

And use the Nulldc version I pointed to in the first post.

After some testing it seems reshade works best on Nulldc rather than Demul, eveything I posted here was capture using Demul, but it seems it has some z-buffer problems during cutscenes and closeups, something that doesn't seem to happen on NullDC.

My biggest concern about shenmue III are actually the character models, the game can be better or worse, but if the characters looks like some random people doing Shenmue cosplays, and that is how they look to me right now... it can put me out of the game.

I am sorry for posting this again, but I did some characters models based on the passport faces directly ripped from the game, so I don't understand why thet don't do this, at least....

Now it'd be great if someone can figure out a way to port the "better clipping" version of the dreamcast widescreen mod to xbox, so that we get both no clipping on the sides and the correct cinematic aspect ratio now that the black bars have been removed.

Shenmue I, Shenmue II & What's Shenmue Widescreen HEX hack.

Hi I bring you an hex fix to patch a Shenmue I 1ST_READ.BIN/ISO/GDI/CDI.

This hex hack will make Shenmue display in Widescreen aspect ratio without clipping or glitches unlike NullDC extra geometry option or previous action replay codes, it will basically render the extra geometry necessary for 16:9 TV's.

The hack works great on emulators, as do on a real Dreamcast. (Click Show for download links)

Every single model uses the passport faces as a base.

Sorry for the overload of images, I know it seems I always try to post my pics when this topic surfaces....

Bu t my point is, the excuse of old models and new tech incompatible is... well... BS.

So the real reason why they aren't using faces close to the originals is beyond my comprenhension...

You can directly patch the CDI, there is no need to extract and recompile it.

Just drop the .cdi into an hex editor find and replace the values and you are good to go.

The obsession with clutching to the passport models is ridiculous considering Ryo never actually looked like that through all our hours actually *playing* the game. It's ruinous and warps expectations into unrealistic territory.

It was a moon-shot at realism on Dreamcast, but that's it. As good as they were then, they fall short immensely on modern standards of realism, and aren't stylised enough to look like an art style decision.



No one wants realistic characters, Shenmue is more about stylized charecters, I don't see Why they can't atempt to use similar aesthetics, no one is asking for Realistic characters, but for charecters that remotely resemble to the one they are atempting to cosplay...

Actually basic facial features of this new Ryo are mostly identical to the passport one, yet, they fail to match its aesthetics.

Yes Dreamcast Ryo never looked like the passport during normal gameplay, yet it didn't look like the continuous abominations we are getting, so.... If we have to choose one..

I won't get tired of repeating the same, passport model quality is nothing unreachable, and they still look fenomenal even today, not AAA level, but quite serviceable

Ryo animations tests in Unreal Engine 4.

As the tittle says.

I've been toying exporting the 3D model I use for my renders into Unreal engine 4 testing some animation and learning how the engine works,

It is a very Basic test, but it shows how passport Ryo would look in a modern engine, I did it just for fun, and prove the the model can actually look quite good when thrown in to a modern engine, it lacks facial riggin or animation ( that reminds me of something ... xD)

I had some problem importing materials to UE4, so you will see some jankiness in some speculars but whatever.
