This game reminds me why I love survival horror/adventure games in the first place. It also reminds me how much I like the Clock Tower series. I haven't played one since the PSX days (a
long time ago) and it brings back those memories of those times when I would play so many horror games that Capcom would just release annually and do so very well. This game features no combat (unless you include using some extremely limited defence manoeuvres) and you are chased through a large areas. The hiding places are surprisingly limited and if you get hit/caught, you die really quickly. It's like survival horror difficulty turned up to "very hard" but I am loving the challenge. It's pretty much got that old school Capcom horror game style to it; search the environments, read the files to get to know the storyline/characters more, limited ways to defend yourself.
There's no real storyline, it's very light on that front, but it does a really good job of presenting an aura of mystery all the same. The presentation on the whole is very nice; good voice acting, nice music, art style that captures the time of when it was set, very well. The game is just dripping in atmosphere. Was surprised to see that the game was Directed by film director Kinji Fukasaku, a director whose work I like quite a lot.
The game surprises me every so often very well. After being chased out of a shop, I thought I was having a moment of respite from the crazy serial killer, so I headed to the save area, filled up the holy water which you use to fend off your attacker and was about to save the game when all of a sudden: "
ALYSSA!" and he suddenly came around the corner right at me... I nearly shat myself, haha.
So yeah, this is a refreshing change from all of the RPGs I've been playing a lot of nowadays. May just get me back into horror gaming again.
