^Max Goldberg is an idiot for not selling the site for a premium price when it was still hot. He would've been like Tom from Myspace and laughing all the way to the bank, instead he's the one being laughed at by retaining ownership of a site that instantly became outdated as soon as Youtube, tumblr, and other similar sites were coming into fruition.

Few of us have a crystal ball and hindsight is always 20/20. Just imagine how much everyone would be saying Zuckerberg was an idiot if he had cashed out when Facebook was seemingly "hot" in the really early days. Not the most apt comparison comparing a meme site to a social network, just saying that things that seem so obvious in hindsight don't always seem that way at the time. We could probably all can think of the road not traveled at one time or another.

Would anyone have really bought that site for any big amount though?

He had a big buyer (Yahoo or something) and decided not to do it so he can retain full ownership of the content, fearing that they would've brought upon major changes.

Honestly, he would've bought it back at a premium price if he loved the damn site so much. Not sure if Facebook is a fair comparison, I don't recall if they had any offers. Myspace did and they took it, that one was much riskier since they were the biggest social media site at the time but it ended up working out.

I don't know if you can call it hindsight either, when I saw Youtube as a major hub for videos I was like "what's the need for pages with a GIF and audio looped over anymore?" That was fine during the dialup days but speeds were catching up for video and Youtube was doing some cutting edge stuff with loading streaming media.

Well then yeah, that's pretty dumb of him not to sell. That site couldn't have been THAT big of a money maker for him, even at its peak.

Maybe I'm wrong.

@Kenny Facebook was actually offered a billion dollars by Yahoo at one point and Zuckerberg turned them down. There's some articles about it with one of the original Facebook investors describing the situation. It's a really cool read.

That's interesting, didn't know that. Facebook was such a heads or tails situation though, cause the mass migration from Myspace to Facebook was something no one was anticipating. And the fact it stayed that way to this day is even more unprecedented.

But meme sites? Dime a dozen. From reddit to imgur to tumblr, all of which are much more user friendly and (more importantly) less obnoxious. YTMND was the Myspace of meme sites.

Speaking of reddit, anyone remember Digg? #-o

I remember thinking reddit was such a stupid, ugly site that would never take off. Funny how that turned out. I don't even know what Digg is supposed to be anymore.

Have a kevin rose gif

How does Yahoo have that sorta spending power? I've used their e-mail service for years and so end up on their main page with the search engine and all the news stories. Their search engine is pure baws as well. Is it simply a case that so many millions of people do the same as me that they're able to sell advertising for astronomical prices, or do they own so many other successful ventures that they use them to have such incredible cash/lines of credit to buy other ventures for overinflated amounts?
