Dreamcast on modern tv

Postby rockerlad » Thu Mar 10, 2016 7:40 am

So I purchased a pal version of Shenmue 2 the other day so it's time to dust off the dresncast and play both again.
What do I require to make my dreamcast work via a hdmi port?

Thanks for any help

There are number of ways you can connect your Dreamcast to your HDTV.

1) If your TV has VGA input, you can use a VGA box for Dreamcast and plug it in. You can find it on eBay for cheap.

2) You can also use the RF cable, but the quality will be very poor.

3) Scart cable is also another option. You can buy one from eBay.

If you can't use the above options, you can use VGA to HDMI converter -- but there will be significant input lag. You may find it very challenging to play games.

That's all I can think of.

Righ on the back of my tv I have 3 hdmi and the three coloured holes, so do I buy a vga box and plug that into my dream cast then get a cable from the vga box that plugs into the three coloured holes (red yellow and white)?

Thanks for the advice.

If you have a EBay account you can just buy a RCA(3 colored component)cable for pretty cheap:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xdreamcast+rca.TRS0&_nkw=dreamcast+rca&_sacat=0

You can also buy them for more expensive on amazon.com:

To think how innovative the Dreamcast was, but still it shipped with a standard RF/Aerial connector :D

How bad is the input lag with the hdmi thing? Also, do I need both of the things anime linked?

Some people will say other wise, but when you go from analog to digital there is always input lag. How much depends on the equipment you use. But when it comes to SHMUPS and fighters all input lag is bad. VGA box all the way or S-Video for the games that don't support it.

As far as I know those 2 items i linked are all you need. I dont have them myself but they ahve been on my amazon wish list for a while now, and the amazon comments section reccomend these 2 items to play the Dreamcast on HDMI equiped monitors. Thats all I really know, I plan on getting these when i get the chance though.

One thing they couldn't innovate was the development of the TV input standards! Not even TV companies knew.

Make sure you spend the extra $$$ and get a box which does 1080p upscaling. I got one which simply does HDMI conversion and retains the 480p.. so kind of disappointing. Will grab a 1080p upscaler later.

Check out this review.

Like us he's a Shenmue fan, but he doesn't demo Shenmue unfortunately.

He does mention whether there is input lag or not, but it's obviously hard to tell when he's just dumping the footage straight from his Egalto rather than recording both screen and controller at the same time.

1080p with HDMI looks great on 3D games.
