Pro-forklifter here. He's doing piecework, which if you have the right attitude, becomes like a game! I've done piecework, and I found it more interesting to see how to maximise the throughput - timing myself to estimate how many I can do in a day, strategies for cutting off the smallest corner to save a bit of time. All of this is made part of a game in the forklift driving. And I too made huge stacks of cash (in Shenmue, that is!) and spent it on, well, Darts and HangOn. And then when I went onto Shenmue II I had to buy stacks of toys so that I didn't hand over Y42,000 to Wong, Sam and Larry!
