If the cursive style is indeed the problem (I personally don't have any trouble reading it, but we did learn cursive in school when I was a kid), then why not just use some classy serif font and keep the strong brushwork of the Japanese version. Yu Suzuki's brushwork in Japanese is strong and assured, whereas his version with roman letters is not (imo). So, something like this would be my suggestion:

That'd be a nice compromise if Yu stuck to his guns on a non-cursive font.

Such a solution would be perfect. To me, the Roman letters version also felt less confident. I'm not criticizing Yu's effort though since it would be the same if many of us had to draw Japanese characters. It just looks a bit off and uneven in comparison.

It does look bad with the gold effect applied, but maybe if the letters were evened out and looked more balanced like the Japanese logo, or some strokes smoothed, it might look better.

I usually don't like gold colored things but it fits here I think. I think that the box art for Shenmue I and II on Dreamcast got it right. The logo wasn't too flat but not overly 3D either.

the new suzuki font is an improvement over the papyrus but the original cursive is still the best. imo

Voted for Nr2. The new Shenmue 3 doesn't look good except the letter S and Number 3



The S doesn't fit to "henmue" which looks like was drawn by some kid or guy with shaky hand...no disrespect but it looks awful.

Yeah I just checked and I'm not happy with it. I respect Yu san immensely, but he has got to realise that the cursive font is best. Not only aesthetically but also because it maintains the connection to Shenmue and Shenmue II. It's as simple as that really. The previous games had it so it should be mandatory in Shenmue III. I hope the logo changes back to the original in the near future.

Original logo, without a shadow of a doubt. There is an element of nostalgia behind it but the other two are pretty poor in comparison.

It turns out to be a pretty pessimistic scenario. Yu is emotionally tied to his family-made logo while he sounds very eager to let the franchise have a new departure, concretely and symbolically.

The bright side of the situation is that no one but the fans were especially shocked by this logo in the trailer so far. So it's a fact that its design is not as bad as it looks.
